Looked in my storage stable today and found that the bottom two bales of dengi hifi have been burrowed into and spoilt by rats

How do you deal with your rats........ I have asked the YO to get some poison and in the meantime have booby trapped a swing bin full of water with chocolate paste on the lid.....

Teach the bastards to eat my merlins dinner

My OH with his air-rifle is our best control!
I don't like poison particularly as we have had a few kestrels die near us from eating poisoned mice and I am worried that the poison would also affect the barn owls that eat the mice.
The swing bin trap does work but I prefer the instant kill of an air-rifle.

uh huh air rifle works best, however i like the idea of the swing bin as i am a rubbish shot, unlike OH who gets everything first time from 50 paces

Zak is useless..... he watches them wander round the corner and then gets excited when they are long gone

Cant afford to pay your vets bill when Ozzy lets them have the first bite ...... just to be fair of course!!!

Dont like the idea of poison, especially as we have a buzzard living in the woods above the stables

and have never tried the swing bin thing before

I dont like the idea of them suffering though....

Air rifle.....!!! OH has 12 bore shot gun, Air rifle and .22 rimfire...... we have never seen one to shoot it.... If you go armed they go into hiding

Your rats must be clever. Ours are plain stuuuupid!
We chuck stuff onto the concrete ledges around the yard and out they come!
salami seems to be a favorite as does marmite sarnies, then you just pick em off one at a time. This only works when OH has control of the gun!
Like i said i am a rubbish shot!

i like to see the buzzards.
i read that there are too many now and they are eating the songbirds/ground nesting birds.
is this true?

LOL you have to lure them out and wait QUIETLY!!!!

Used to be load of rats at my livery yard but now having around 4 farm cats there are practically none. JRT's are good too.

There is a pair of GPigs still...... it was a trio before.... do you think they will survive in pairs...

Actually one of the old liveries has returned and her cat follows her to the yard...... perhaps it will do the honours

Or maybe not after Zak chased it through the woods today

Not fair, he has never met a cat before.... and it wouldnt stay still to say hello"!!!!

cats def - new yard on a farm and has 5 of them and I havent seen a rat yet!!
My summer house at the end of the garden got rat infested last winter due to the warmer winters they are just loving it and breed like mad...!!
Both neighbours have got new cats and fingers crossed this winter they wont return...
they chew through everything, destroyed most of my rugs and chewed most of the summer house walls to pieces as well as electrical wires and you have to bleach everything down. My poor guinea pigs are now moved into a small shed nearer the house to get away from them....
I had to leave down poison in the end and that seemed to do the trick for a couple of weeks....I bought a huge blue tablet thing from france which they take back to their nest and wipes them out....hate the thought but what can you do!!

Threw in the towel last year when they started walking casually across the house end of the yard - too close for comfort - we put down poison (dogs & cats & OH all useless!) - blue wax block thing in a pipe in one of the sheds where the animals can't go - haven't seen one since.

I have found setting beer or soda drinks out works since carbonation kills them .Plus because it is food they don't get bait shy . Fizzy drinks work better than beer [make sure it is the sugar variety , they won't touch the artificial stuff] . Pass this around to anyone needing the info

Swing bin and water is a good one - though not very nice and plus you always want to look but always slightly dread it too incase they are still "treading water!"

Patterdale Terrier and a bright blue poison called Tom Cat is very good - least they die quick on that stuff!

Get a terrier! they love it ours is 15 and still hunts them now and mice too! better than a gun as its quicker and less boring to wait for them to come out.
