Went out on the headland today for a hack, had a couple of good gallops, then I decided we'd go back home a different way from our usual route.
Now, pony can be a bit nappy, but has improved immeasurably recently, to the point where it's mostly just the odd pause occasionally rather than full blown tantrums. Today however, he decided he was not keen on going down an unfamiliar path, oh no. Spins, takes off up the usual path and I hit the deck. Get dragged along for a few strides, because I'm blowed if I'm letting go, it's a long walk home. (Yes, I know, not sensible!) He then stops and we head off down the new path a few yards, I remount, all fine. Glad none of the walkers were close enough to see my shame ?
Get to the stream, it's a bit boggy, but the cattle cross it, so should be fine. Pony disagrees, is dubious about the depth of it. I've got off again to give him a lead, so he ascertains the depth of said stream by hauling me off my perch on a dry bit into the middle. Great. Damp feet. As it turns out, it is pretty deep, so I revise my tactics and ask him to cross on the (fairly large) stepping stones. Eventually he decides that he will do that and we reach the other side, hop back on, finish the ride uneventfully.
He's been very good of late, I think sometimes he just likes to remind me not to take it for granted!
Now I'm off to scrape the mud off my boots. ??
