Just saw an ad for a lovely 2 year old, thought he might be under priced. Then I read "blue eye - hence price."

Would a blue eye really put people off that much? Also, would a horse be marked down in showing for having a blue eye?

Wouldn't put me off at all, just curious what others think.

Used to have a mare with blue eyes - so obviously didn't put me off, but when I was first introducing her to people I often got negative comments. I thought she looked great though, she had a long mane and her wild blue eyes made her look slightly mad! If horse is going cheap because of them grab it quick. Never affected her sight and she lived into her late 20's.

My mare has one blue eye, she's bay, and it freaks lots of people out.. I have horsey friends who can't even look at it without cringing.. So yes, it does put some people off..

1 blue eye or a wall eye can be marked down in showing. Also some people just don't like them.
2 blue eyes weren't that common (though are becoming more common now) and used to be sort after. I was offered descent money for my 2 blue eyed cob until they realised he was gelded so they couldn't breed from him.

My daughter's piebald mare has 2 blue eyes - she was a prolific winner in the showring at local and County level; it never put the judges off :)

It depends what breed the pony is. Wall eyes are more forgiven in Welsh A's and Traditional Coloured Cobs. Most cremello's have wall eyes.

Personally I don't like them BUT I would only mark a pony down for it in the show ring if I had 2 of equal merit - one with brown eyes, the other with one or two wall eyes - then I would go for the brown eyed pony. Strictly speaking it's not a conformation fault. Most judges will look past the eye colour, others will love it, others will hate it. You pay your money and take your chance and put names of judges that don't like it in a little black book not to be shown under again.

Wow, how unusual.

As for the OP, if it is a bay or dark coloured pony, then yes it may be marked down by some judges, but that would come to personal preference.

Even at a reduced price I wouldn't buy a horse with a blue/wall eye(s). They really aren't my cup of tea.

The mare I bought for my daughter has one eye which is half blue half brown, add to that she's chestnut with four white socks you can understand why she was being sold for peanuts.
Took me a while to get used to it as she always looked as though she was glaring at me! Fab pony though, does everything we want so I'm glad other people overlooked her.

Depends what judge and what class really.

I personally love a nice set of 2 blue eyes...providing the rest of the horse is nice too!

Don't like just one blue eye....nor like a lot of white.

But I am biased with my own lad [he has a pair, both sides] ;)

Just marmite really! Have people come out who love him and think he's pretty....then some who automatically hate his eyes.

Gosh this is the 1st time in over 5 years of owning a (1) wall eye coloured cob I have ever known anyone comment derogatory, I didnt even know there was/could be an issue.

He shows and does really really well & judges always compliment him on well, everything right down to his conformation.

Friends / sharers / passers by always exclaim how cute his wall eye is, I say its his naughty side and the brown is his butter wouldnt melt side.

Interesting post OP I am enjoying reading this one.

^This. I would never dismiss a horse on eyes or colour - a good horse is just that :)

Each to their own, I guess :)

I have a friend who has a no greys, no mares rule. I don't take it personally because I have a grey mare.

They just don't do it for me, at all.

I'd be inclined to pay more for a horse with blue eyes, I love them! But each to their own, I can see why people get freaked out with them haha!

I personally am not a fan of wall eyes... Wouldn't want to buy a horse with them. But it's just gives me the creeps, I certainly do not view a horse will wall eyes as a lesser horse

I perfer a wall eye to my appy x crazy eyes :

I think they can look amazing- the poster with the bay mare with one wall eye - it looks like a glass eye and looks cool a bit freaky at first in a good way, i bet she can dominate with he reye alone :)

Creature in my sig has brown eye on the showing side with a blue rim and a blue eye on the left. He's winning best cob in the pic. I am glad his showing side is brown. :o but he's such a pretty boy, I don't worry about his eye:

I think it's ok on a white face, freaks me out a little in a dark face. I know a cob with two blue eyes, I think it's plain ugly.
