Hi there,

Please help me decide what to wear. I have a small local showing show to go to, and plan to do the 'riding club horse' class. I haven't done a showing class for years and would like to wear my BLUE tweed jacket, but I have only got a BLACK velvet hat. Do you think that would look odd. I haven't got a shirt or tie yet as I don't know what colour to get. Was thinking of pale blue shirt and mainly red tie.

I have a pikeur black jacket with silver piping that I could wear with a tie or a stock, but that just doesn't seem right.

What do you think? Option 1= blue Tweed and Black hat,
or option 2 = Black jacket, Black hat, please specifiy :-with tie or stock?

Depends on how blue is your jacket, if dark blue yes no problem,if light blue tweed, I think you would still have to go with the black, but would zone in on you not the pony and not red tie but navy I think.

Definately tweed and black hat. Neither are technically correct but are MUCH better than black jacket (never correct for women in the showring) and a stock is never correct either. So definately go with shirt and tie too.

I know this sounds stupid, but could you get hold of soft grey covering for hat or use the blue jacket, as long as you look smart, just where something that makes you look good but doesn't distract from the main person your horse. He's the main one on show, so you have to blend in and show him at his best paces. :):):):):):):)

thanks Teagreen, Is a navy jacket and hat technically correct, with brown rather than black gloves?

Tweed or the navy jacket and either the black hat or a skull cap with navy velvet cover. NOT THE BLACK JACKET PR STOCK!!

A shirt and tie is a must - maybe a navy tie with coloured spots?

I would second the option of a velvet cover for a skull cap - although I fully appreciate the opinions that it isn't the most elegant of headgear it is a darn sight nicer to see than a smashed skull. Sorry, but of a bone of contention for me that there is a 'feeling' that wearing the safest headgear to show is a bot of a non no. Fine if you want to wear a beagler, top hat or whatever but it is time judges (I include the ringside variety in that) can find their way to see past the 'look' of modern headgear. Some people choose safety and they should not be marked down because it doesn't enhance the overall appearance!

This probably also has a relevance in dressage but I still think it is up to the individual what they wear - just don't punish those who take the safety first position.

OOhh that was a luvverly grumble, having spent 3 hours in a hot meeting I think I got a bit over heated!!

For a local show you'll be fine with a black hat and blue tweed, ok its not ideal but it won't loose you too many points neither, if you horse goes well the last thing on the judges mind will be your black hat!

A cream/yellow shirt (depending on the colour of your breaches/jods) and a nice blue polkadot tie will look very smart, black long boots and leather gloves, so they match your hat.

Or you could fade your velvet hat in the sunlight and turn it grey :D but I wouldn't recommend it.

Good luck and enjoy!
