My guinea pigs live at the yard.... they have a nice rabbit cage (like a giant hamster cage) and they are suitably happy.

But.... so is the rat or mouse that is living in there with them

I put a cardboard box in for a sleeping house and every morning the uninvited rodent has nicked their food and taken it on top of the box and built a nest in the hay (I put hay on top to keep them warm)

It has also stripped the filling out of the duvet that is over the top of the cage to insulate it!!!

I have tried poison, it ate it but still seems to be there.... and I have a trap set... baited with chocolate!!! But it is wisely ignoring that too.... I also have a swing bin ready and waiting

But it wont die or move on...... any ideas???..... I am scared my pigs will catch some horrid disease from it/them

I can sympathise - I hate mice/rats. They are so dirty & they make everywhere they go smell.

We have got an efficient stable cat who keeps the numbers down. Have you tried baiting your trap with peanut butter?

You have to keep putting the poison down on a daily basis, you probably have more than one rat/mouse. Leave a bucket of water nearby. The poison, thins the blood and makes them thirsty. Keep putting poison out until it stops going. That should mean rats/mice, because there are bound to be multiples are dead.

Poor piggies - are they scared or are they OK?
Hope your trap/poison works.
We have the horrid clogdancers (as my OH calls them) in our attic at the moment, the poison is bought, but can I persuade him up the steps to lay it - no, meanwhile they dance all night.

Poison seems not to be tastier than the GP food that they are helping themselves too

Going to take some peanut butter up tomorrow.... to give them a change.... the ones at home liked it

I'd move piggy cage while you sort the rat/mouse problem out. Mice shouldn't be a problem but rats might be if they can get through the bars in with piggies. Rats carry nasty diseases that can be water borne.

MQ it will be a mouse for sure as I 90% a rat wouldn't be able to squeeze through thr bars of the cage. Can the pigs get on top of the box??? If not I would be inclided to put the trap on there..........though the snap might scare the piggies half to death!!!!

I found a swing bin very helpfull but make sure there is something really yummy in it to tempt their taste buds then I'd let me jack russel in to finish them off. also place it near something they can climb onto to be able to reach the bin.

CS.... I toyed with the idea of putting it in the cage, but worried for obvious reasons..... and hoping a mouse as far less scary than a rat

Samstar.... tried baiting the top with chocolate but no good.... just looks like i have used it for a toilet

going to try peanut butter on the very inhumane trap and on the lid of the bin i think!!

Got a snappy trap baited with chocolate.... the amount the bloody thing is stealing out of the pigs food dish, it should be the size of a house!!!!

I keep forgetting to take the peanut butter up to change the bait, I think its on a diet!!!
