Does anybody tow a horse trailer an X5? Just interested to know if they can do the job just as well as a disco or a shogun. And if they are ok which engine is best, or if an Auto is better than a manual. Thank You.

3.0d or the 335d which is the twin turbo - really depends on age
most are Auto, however manual boxes ok.
not as good ground clearance as disco or shogun.
Residual value always better on auto, if you are going for one for this reason go for a sport rather than SE (people prefer the sport - sports seats, body styling etc)

However for towing I would take the Disco or Shogun every time!! (even though I sold them for X years!!)

But for a normal horse trailer not doing much off road, they are fine.

One of my friends used to tow with 1 and said it was fine on the roads, but awful on wet grass at show venues. Her husband (ex Land Rover employee) once got the X5 stuck on the grass behind the house and she had to tow him off with her Subaru Impreza.

They also make you look like a drug dealer, but then again, so does my car!

x5's are not safe in snow!! and id reccommend work horses such as the shogun or disco!!:)

X5s are not unsafe in the snow (we use them extensively at work), BUT, you do need to drive them sensibly. The auto is way better than the manual, particularly just for normal towing, again assuming that you are a competent driver who doesn't use the throttle like an On/Off switch!

I like them very much as a car, and would certainly consider one for myself having used them so much for work purposes, but this will only be when my Isuzu Trooper needs to be buried with full military honours, as it is a fantastic tow car and I desperately do not wish to be parted from it any time soon.

Good idea unless you're orange and called shell or trace!!!! mind range rover sports are also a chav favorit esp white ones :D

LOL, no it's the black ones that are chav-tastic!!!!!!

Back to the op though, my friend tows with her X5 auto, not sure of the engine size but she goes all over with her ifor 510 and 17.1 tb, and loves it! I personally love the heated seats in this weather!!!!!

Interested in the feedback so far as we are thinking of buying one as OHs company car and wouldn't mind using it now and again for towing. Hoping to see further feedback.

We were going to buy a lorry but as OH wants one of these I might just invest in another trailer so we can take 4 out at a time. Other car is a Range Rover Vogue so we will towing with that for most of the time.

We have both a BMW x5 and a Disco. We do tow with the BMW and have no problem what so ever.We have towed thousands of miles and also loaded it up with all we need to crew at an endurance ride.

Both are automatic and tow well. The BMW does give you and the horses a smooth ride.

Range Rover Sport - I love mine right down to his last little blacked out window!
Volvo XC90 is also great to tow with and performed really well in the snow / ice and that was without winter or off road tyres so may be worth a look.
