Went to visit kennels this week as going away for a few days. What an awful place. Small indoor cages, smelly, rickety outside run with a fence my dog could have escaped from, and sad looking boarders. Was the only one with spaces at peak season and now i know why. But how could anyone leave their dog in such a dingy rundown place? Have found a suitable alternative but would rather have cancelled our break than traumatise my dogs by leaving them in such a place.

I've been temp working at a kennels and I am genuinlly shocked I had to leave...The actual block of 20 or so kennels are clean, spacious and nice so they are fine. But this weekend it's fully booked so do they turn anyone else away? No. They tell custs they are just socialising the dog when they drop it off and well put it in it's actual kennel later. Well no, it'll go in a small back room full of small crates and stay in there...not nice. Probably about 20 extra dogs all paying full price. I was livid! If either of my dogs were ever put through that I would kill someone!!! I know my description doesn't sound too bad but it is :(

When i was at college we did some work experience in a boarding kennels, and the set up was as emma described, there was a lovely row of 20 kennels, and behind out of sight was another 50 + in old brick buildings, u literally had to duck right own to get into the kennels, they where tiny and all meshed, horrible mingey and dank.
Same with cats, a cattery block thena large rotten shed for over flow.
You really do have to ask alot of questions and have a good look around.
We have some nasty kennels here but we also have (I know it not a huge number) 1 kennels that are lovely.

Had a bad feeling on the phone because they didn't seem to want any details about my dogs; just wanted to book them in and secure the money no doubt.

It looked like a canine jail. I doubt they got walked much and I think they probably just hose the whole place out rather than the dogs doing their business outside, because the kennels were very clean but damp, and there was a smell.......

Makes me want to open my own dog boarding service!

ive used kennels twice..wouldnt again
ok kennels and staff nice but one of mine came back fat(usually the other way round in some cases) she was eating my other dogs feed and i did say about this and ask them to feed one in a cage which i supplied..wasnt even used i doubt nor the bedding i supplied
the other time my dog came back with a wound on her nose..as the outside where they went to 'exercise was gravel' they didnt tell me this at the beginning

also we have a kennels next to our yard and i was going to take on a shift from a friend who used to work there..omg..dogs were just fed at what the staff thought(no wonder we have abese dogs) unless the owners have said(alot diidnt)..they said that they were exercised ..nope..just shoved out in the outdoor run..no ventilation, windows shuts

in the last few days i can hear a dog whinning and upset being there..its awful to hear
i wouldnt never put my dogs in to kennels again(im sure theres some nice ones out there)
when i go away mine go into home boarding ..yes you pay more but they are more happy and actually get walked and human interaction

I've never used kennels. I either send my dogs to a farm owned by a trainer (dogs sleep indoors), or we have a sitter stay with them at home. I went with my sister-in-law recently to pick up their dog from kennels, and while there was no discernible smell, I don't see how penning a large dog in a 15 x 5 space, within full view of its neighbour, can be anything other than stressful.

`Scuse me..but having boarded dogs for many many years..no staff, just me,there have been several occasions where my knowledge has saved a life. The most hairey was a Briard ,went in one morning..dog just standing still, something very wrong, rang vet and left rubber on the road.I suspected Bloat, never actually seen that condition..but it fitted;now Bloat is a super emergency. The dog was operated on successfully and stayed at the vets till the owners return. In fact I insisted on that ,as bloaters often relapse.
Again, bull terrier ..lots of salivery sick one morning,so just observed for that day,but next day got him in for a suspected blockage..result one section of corn cob removed. It did not show on scan or x ray..but fortunately they believed my idea and went in for and route about.
It all goes very pear shaped if you employ staff, good ones are very exceptional indeed, mostly they were daft young girls with no practical knowledge,no ability to learn and usually just plain lazy.
It was that that stopped me continuing ..it drove me nuts going `round to see if the stupid things had actually done what they were paid to do.My ability to tolerate idiots (proven ones BTW) was too small. I also got fed up with being their "counseller". There are good kennels out there ,maybe not big and flashy, and the only true guide is word of mouth.

There are some nice kennels out there :D
The ones i work at are very nice, we have 33 'double' kennels, some with extra large runs ideal if there are more larger dogs/a few little dogs. We also have a 'singles' block, which is only big enough for one dog, all kennels have their own outdoor run. We also have a greyhound block too because the owners own racers, and know alot of people who own racers too which use this block for their greys. All the dogs are walked for about 10mins each day, unless the dog owners say otherwise (extra walks, no walking at all, etc) we have outside paddocks for 'outside' dogs, or if the owners want their dogs outside in the fresh air for the daytime. Our cattery is new and purpose built, with around 70 large pens.
Anything the owners request, we do our best to make them happy. Certain food, feeding patterns, seperately or together, walking more/not at all, kitchen kennel (ideal for elderly/ill/dogs with medication), outside paddocks, medication, washes etc we will do it.
We sweep, mop and clean all kennels in use every morning, aswell as walking, so the dogs are happy and clean.
I cant think of anything else..... :D

sounds alot nicer than the ones ive seen
i supose you cant mention the name of the kennel..pm me if you wish as i see you from oxfordshire..be nice to know where

I used to work many years ago before i met my husband at a kennels and its the only one in our area that i will and do send my dogs to. They are walked twice a day in a enclosed wooded area, heated pens not the newest but very clean and tiled. Its family owned and i know for a fact they treat every dog as if its there own. If anyone is around south or west yorkshire send your dogs or cats to Bretton kennels and cattery. Cannot rate them enough.
