My back hips and legs are sore and fatigued. I have a sport massage every fortnight but wondered if anyone had any advice. It's making riding unpleasant as it hurts! Currently riding in a wintec as pony is still growing he is a welsh d so pretty stocky. Thanks

Doctors for a blood test, as well as a vull blood count they need to check thryroid, B12 and vitamin D. You might have to be firm with them to do this. Its not normal to hurt like that, and its even less normal to hurt like that if your having sports massage therapy. Why are you going so often? I go that often but I'm disabled and a total wreck! I'd want to book in with an osteo to make sure you are straight and a podiatrist to see if theres an issue with your feet/gait thats contributing. But I will also bet you a sizable amount of money that the bloods will show something.

I think you need to take an organised approach in trying to find out what's going on with your body.

You don't say how old you are OP? Or what your current level of fitness is.

Your pony is a youngster and quite wide, yes??

Firstly I think you need to get yourself to your GP and get yourself checked over and some bloods taken if necessary.

Secondly, get yourself to a professional like an osteo or chiropractor (not NHS, you will have to pay, but worth it!) as you may be unlevel and/or assymetric (its a common problem). I have one leg shorter than the other, and never knew this until I had a Medical for something and it was found out! Which explained why I always struggled to get a good canter lead on one particular rein!!

Following on from your chiro/osteo consultation; they will give you advice on how to manage your symptoms and what sort of exercise you would benefit from.

Pilates is known to be helpful for horse riders.

Re. your riding; if you need physio/chiropractic, then so does your horse! And vice versa. So I'd ask a professional to look at your pony, as if you are asymmetric or riding awkwardly, the last thing you want to do is for that to effect your youngster at this crucial stage. Also I would get a qualified person to do a saddle check for you both as it could just be that the saddle you're riding in isn't the best thing for you.

Ditto Leo's words.

And the Pilates recommendation (equine pilates if you can find one).

Definitely Dorset's suggestion for this evening. I like the Radox on the blue box. Really does hit the spot.

I spent £250 this year on bespoke inserts for my shoes. Best money I ever spent. Years of sciatica, hip and back pain gone, plus the numbness that was starting to affect my entire right leg up to my groin, also gone. I wish I had known 10 years ago the importance of foot balance, would have saved myself thousands in osteo and chiro appointments! Silly really as I was a personal trainer and used to assess other people’s posture, but didn’t see my own issues, and neither did numerous specialists.

How did you go about assessing your foot balance? The last year or so my back, hips, Achilles’ tendon and feet generally kill me. I’ve bought various inserts which have helped but I think I may need bespoke.

You need to see a podiatrist, they will take imprints of your feet and asses your gait. Andrew Jenkins in Storrington has a good reputation, I went to BB Walsh in Rustington for mine.

My plantar fasciitis came back this morning...I had 5 days away from yard..put wellies on due to mud and was crippled as I walked across the yard. I could cry as everything takes so much longer when hobbling about AND I’m going away for Hogmanay to party...hey ho.

I was assessed by Step Right orthotics at Burghley. I thought a bit of a con but my parents both swore by the ones they got months earlier, they both have a new lease on life whilst I was spending hundreds on appointments with no improvement so gave it a go as it was right in front of me at Burghley. So glad I did, best present to myself in years (how sad!)

you wouldn't catch me riding on a wintec
Interesting comment. I found it comfortable in the beginning and it is adjustable and he is only 5 so need something adjustable. I have the saddler coming on the 17th so will discuss with him. Trouble is that when you buy a saddke you only ride in it for a short time so you dont know how its going to affect you long term.

Riding in Wintecs causes me considerable pain. I'm not sure who they're designed for, but it isn't any human that resembles me  Worth experimenting with if the pain is since you've been riding in it.

This, so much this! I'd scrap the need for adjustability and buy second hand with the intention to replace if I needed to down the line.
(also traditional trees doesn't mean they can never be adjusted, my ideal VSD was adjusted to template as F got older and lost some topline).

I am 60 and ride and muck out most days and walk so moderately fit but am also overweight. This soreness is a new thing

Good osteo and GP for sure, but I can tell you that the older you get the more difficult it all becomes. I'm 64 and stopped riding last year because of knees rebelling violently. Fully agree with MiJods analysis and advice.

Thanks, sounds promising, I’ve always had flat feet anyway but I think they’re really affecting the rest of me now.

I just went to a private podiatrist. It cost me £40 a session and I went 3 times. You dont need to see a special gait analysis person or anything like that. They all do gait analysis! And will create you a temporary insole to check it works, then have a permanent one made up My partner went after he saw the difference in me. Hes got big flat feet. It made an enormous difference to him as well. Finally stopped the neck pain he'd been having treated on and off for years"
