I hate them , Im a funny shape and they just dont fit

Has anyone found a way of getting some protection rather than the traditional Body protector?

Ive heard back protectors like motorcyclists wear or mountain horse have done a riding jacket

The body guard is great for wnter (mountain horse) Sister has bought a KAN Teq (sp) which she likes, but it was very expensive.

Much as hated my first body protector that had the 'nappy strap' - I would prefer another that covered my cocyx and came further down my body.

My current back protector is a Harry Hall. Made out of two pieces of rigid foam. One bit at the back and one at the front.

However tight I do it it still rides up and jabs me in the chin, and when I fold over a jump I knock it on the pommel. It's really short at the front, so a bit odd!

I had an airowear outlyne for my birthday and I love it.

I had a nasty fall in some woods a few years ago, horse bolted and was swerving around trees and jumping over things I couldnt see and I eventually flew off into an on coming tree, slamming into it with my lower back. Am convinced that without my trusty body proctector, I would be in a wheelchair.

The more they are worn, the more the mould to your shape and get more comfy.

I am old enough to remember what it was like to be in a car without seat belts and how restrictive they felt at first, but now I feel vulnerable without them now.

Sorry, I do not mean to lecture. But now I am older, I am more careful. Do not bounce as well as I did.

The only one that is going to give you the shaping and length in the back is the Kan Teq, where it does cost more than the others, it does include the shoulder protectors and has the most up to date technology partially because its foam is made by Knox, the people who do the motorcycle equipment.

I have one and its the only one that fits my shape and although I had a racesafe one before, this was because it was the only one at the time that sort of fitted

, I'd never go back. I can breathe

as its design doesn't just strap you in with a bit of rigid velcro and its actually moulded which makes it stronger.

Anyway, its the first time I've actually been able to wear a body protector and feel safe and not restricted, although it did look at bit different but once it was on.........

will look into those thanks, I'm 31 and sadly all too aware of the dangers specially as as my horse is now 17.2 and has been known not to behave sometimes but at the same time I felt l had less control because of restictive movement.

But as madhossy said some are so horrible to wear, they get caught on the saddle, poke you in the chin etc etc
If I can find something that fits well then I will wear it

Try the Racesafe 2000 it is fantastic! You barely notice that you are wearing it. I used to hate body protectors but thsi is completely different! They do a huge range of sizes and if nothing fits if you actually go to Treehouse I think they will cut it to the right size for you(they offered for me but they had one whichwas perfect!).

Isn't racesafe not up to standard tho? As i go to alot of yards most will not let you jump unless your using a lvl 3, purple label one. Hence I havnt jumped it a while as i'm more lifely to fall off with one on. I don't care about the protection, i'd rather not come off in the first place. I should really try a modern one tho, see what thier like. Only thing is, once i lose this weight it wont fit!

The racesafe RS2000 is a level 3 although How's also make others for racing which are less.

The most important thing is the purple label = level 3, but the technology has moved on like Ezme says try a modern one, there's things like increased protection on the front, longer backs that are scupted and more technolgy in the foam etc... Plus the newer ones aren't expected to fit a bloke and a woman- hence why I ended up with a Kan Teq (no adjustment for chest required)

Most importantly as you say you are an odd shape, try on some different ones and make sure you are happy, can move and feel comfortable!!

I looked at Kan Teq ones but in the end bought the new Airowear Outlyne which is LOVELY and much cheaper!! It fits ladies with a figure (!) and is made from a really soft, flexible foam - maybe soft is the wrong word - but is much less restrictive than my old one. Would advise going to have it properly fitted though, they shouldn't catch anywhere on your saddle.

I looked at the Airowear and went the other way, it was soft and much like their normal protectors but with a few darts to make a shape, it also had no give for an unfit me to have a gasp or two of air after a bit of exercise lol! Soft is great but does it give as much protection in an impact?

I also felt that a vulnerable area is my collarbone and would have had to add shoulder protection to the other makes (at an additional cost), having had shoulder protection in the past that hangs down the arm and gets in the way, just the design won it for me.

Anyway one thing this proves is that everyone loves their own one, its just a matter of finding the one that fits and does the job!!
