I have had a Rodney Powell Body Protector for many, many years and it now needs replacing.
I'm sure many people have many different opinions on which is best but I'd like to hear peoples views if possible?

My sister has a Racesafe, and really likes hers. She often forgets to take it off after her round because it's so comfortable for her. The shoulder pads are also very non-restricting. Think she'll probably replace her Racesafe with another- which is the first time a BP of hers will be replaced with an identical copy...

Don't mind you asking at all!

They fit really well as they are shaped for women. The front and back fit together in an overlapped way that allows you to breath as the parts move apart when you breath but cos they overlap there is never a gap so it's not possible for a horse to ever come in contact with your ribs if you get kicked.

I've had lots of falls over the years and think it's the safest on the market. I think she sponsors Chloe from Gift horse eventing so she could prob give you more info than me. I think also the web site is pretty informative too www.kanteq.com

Thanks Kirkton for the info. I do like the sound of the Kanteq but looking at the website it is only available in blue and black. I know that colour probably shouldn't be top of my priorities but I wold prefer to be able to get one in my colours.

Racesafe everytime.

I love mine, it is so comfy, comes in funky colours ;) and has done its job very well- Millie fly bucked me off the other day and I landed flat on my back and the only part of me that ached was the top of my bum where the BP doesn't go!

Thanks for the continued replies.

If I was to go for a Racesafe, is it the RS2000 that I will need?

Edit* Or the RS2010..? Is that a new version?

"Racesafe or Rodney Powell?" neither ! Kan every time!

Too Heavy!! I have the racesafe and love it really don't know your wearing it. I had heard of the Kan so when at YHL I thought I would take a look, I only got as far as picking it up and nearly died of shock at how heavy it is

I'm assuming that if it is slightly heavier then it probably is a bit tougher and would withstand a bit more..? Could be wrong I guess.

That's where you went wrong! If you had put one on you would have realised that they fit so well and are so comfortable that you don't know you are wearing it. The extra weight (ie over other BPs) is because the foam is tougher. Once it's on you do not notice the weight and if youhave a cracking fall you are certainly glad of the better quality.

I need to buy a new BP - and I am erring towards a Kan.

Yes they are heavy, but when I tried on one (not even quite the right size for me) it didn't feel half as heavy, and was very comfy.

Also, at the breakfall training, Kerilli had hers on under her coat - I couldn't tell at all, it didn't give her a 'hunch back' appearance, and seemingly allowed her to move easily - both complaints I have had about other BP's.

I also tried an Airowear Outlyne which was very nice - hard ot make a direct comparision though, as they had my size in the Outlyne but not the Kan. However, I gather Kan will 'tweak' to fit perfectly...

I'm thinking that you didn't try it on ?! It is not heavy at all, I can wear mine for ages and even forget I have it on at times! The best Body Protector I have ever worn and would never ever buy anything else !!

yes, exactly. I wanted them to use "Worth the Weight" as an advertising line... ;) ;)
It's heavier because it is more protective, it's the pay-off for that level of protection, like a kevlar vest say.
iirc it's no heavier than a racesafe + airjacket or RP + airjacket, though.
A Kan is only heavy in the way a quality overcoat is heavy - when you pick it up. Once you put it on you absolutely do not notice the weight at all.

I would have said Rodney Powell 12 months ago but I have been converted to the Kan and I would never buy anything else again :), I have never liked the racesafe for a few reasons though.

And also when I spoke to the ladies on the Kan stand at Burghley they said they were looking at bringing out coloured shoulder protectors this winter; I didn't ask about full covers but it may be worth e-mailing them before discounting them completely.

ditto. absolutely fine for jump jockeys who are falling at speed, tucking and rolling, and incredibly unlikely to be thrown against a solid fence (even the white rails are collapsible), but those small squares cannot dissipate a large force the way a big flat piece of smartfoam can.
a certain very high up medic has said that he has no idea how they got Level 3 certification... :( :( :(
brilliant bit of kit for jockeys, not so much for eventers, imho.

I'm getting a Kan for Christmas :D
I hate wearing BPs and everyonle seems to rave about how comfy Kans are, and the fact the makers will keep trying until they find one that fits. I want a BP that is fitted and will last, the Kan seems to fit the bill.

That has just made my mind boggle - aesthetics over safety? Event pony is being ridden in Rodney Powell until jockey grows enough to fit a KAN.

Absolutely, your bib covers your torso anyway, it's your silk and sleeves that really show up.
Btw, Kan people, they now do a medical armband holder to fit over 1 of your shoulder pads, very neat, worth getting for BE and PC people.
