I have a RaceSafe and a Hit Air. Both are great but would choose the air jacket any day in terms of comfort and peace of mind. I wear the HitAir on its own when jumping/hacking, would wear both together for XC.

I've been fitted for an adults XS racesafe, but I'm waiting for it to come in as they wanted to try a different back length.
Is there any difference in design to the child's? (Ie. Front isn't as long) as it had to be pulled almost to the tightest and I'm planning on losing weight and don't really want to have to replace it again in a few months so wondering if I should get them to order a child's XL in too

There's a size chart on the RS website that gives you all the measurements for all size, that should help you compare. The lengths are different between child XL & adult XS.
