My boy is a serious sweet itch sufferer. he currently has a rambo sweet itch huddy but im seriously considering buying him a boett rug. Has anyone got one? are they really worth the money?

In a word - yes. I've tried many sweetitch rugs over the last 10 years (Rambo Sweetitch Hoody being the worst) and always end up buying a Boett. I do keep a DeMeulenkamp for spare for when the Boett is in the wash. Although the fabric looks very similar the DeMeulenkamp does not fit as well and does not wear as well.

I've heard those aren't quite as good as the boett. My boy suffers so bad. I've tried all sorts but i think the boett is going to be my last option. Whats the fit like? for a 15.2 trakehener my boys quite muscley around the neck and chest?

They are meant to fit snugly. When ordering for the first time, the National Sweetitch Centre will give you a measurement sheet and you will need to take various measurements. They also like to see a photo to get an idea of build. My TB X Welsh is also quite well built and they advised a half size bigger.

I've never used the Boett but I did buy a Pagony, which is supposed to be a cheaper alternative.

The Pagony isn't worth the money IME: quality was cr@p; the stitching on the seams started coming apart almost immediately and I had to repair it myself on my sewing machine! Also, somehow or other my boy got one of the straps caught up around a hind leg and was standing in the field all tied up in it; plus the obvious disadvantage that these kind of rugs have to be put on over the head (Pagony does, don't know about the Boett though?).

So if you're buying, I'd say go for the Boett. Have also heard (not tried them) that Snuggy Hoods do a good one? But very expensive IMO.

I quite like my pagony  never required a sweet itch rug before, but at this yard he seems to have been suffering more with flies. Last year he scratched alot not enough to remove mane. So I thought I'd get something for him this year, and the pagony seems to be holding up well

thanks everyone! definitely going to order him one. i bought him a snuggy hood. the hood damaged his hair and all his mane fell out and hasnt grown back since!

I had a Boett on my TB, it does work. They are a faff to put on, but to be honest, when I put my Mare out without hers, as soon as midges appeared she would come over and stand while I wrestled it on. She knew it worked. They will tailor the fit for your horse, so when you contact them, describe his shape, it won't be a problem.

The only snag with them, is that if your horse is in a field with wire, it may get wrecked sooner than you hope. Also if he is in a field with friends who bite rugs, as the material is not super strong.

Try some Cavalesse from your vet, it made a difference to my horse. It is a bit expensive, but it's 3 months worth for £70 and if you don't have to buy sprays and lotions, it is not as bad as you might think.

thanks to you all! I've got one on the way. hopefully my boy will be able to enjoy his summer in it this year!
