Would it be allowed to just say it didnt go too well & leave it at that or do you guys want the nitty gritty?
wink.gif

Well, it was my first ever 3DE & I had agreed to be in CCI* section A & do everything a day early. My reasoning being that I would not have to do too much hanging about & I would get nice fresh ground. Wrong....
frown.gif
That didnt work.

Arrived on Tues evening & went for a pleasant happy hack with HHOer DionneR (who had a much worse week than me). The ground was fine & all was well.

By Wednesday it was all a different story, it rained & rained. I had been looking forward to the trot up, showing off my fit & shiny horse & looking kinda smartish. Quickly ditched the outfit but decided that wellies were a step too far. I can assure you it is the best part of 5 miles to walk to the trot up at Blair & within 5 mins I was utterly drowned & sodden. Horse passed fine & I realised that what you really need is a groom to lead your horse to the trot up for you. Error number 1.

Error number 2 occured within the hour, I should really have lunged this amazing fit beastie that I was going to attempt the ride before his dressage but I didnt have time because I had only just got back from the trot up & still deliberating as to how I was going to get all tacked up & dressed in my top hatted finery without ending up covered in mud
confused.gif
Managed the dressing & tacking dilema but only had an ordinary warmup. The test was actually perfectly ok, nothing great but not badly behaved. Unfortunately he managed to just have a little wiggle, just a brief above the bit moment in every single movement. Now I usually get a mid 30's ish mark at Intermediates so I didnt think an ambition to get 60 something at FEI was unreasonable. You can imagine my

at 73. It took a while to recover.

And so with that as a starting point things got steadily worse. On Friday morning when I should have been getting ready to go XC I was doing nothing, it had rained fairly solidly for 36 hours & they decided to hold out for some drier weather. Our section was therefore told to show jump as the 2nd phase on Saturday & then go XC on Sunday.

I had been particularly looking forward to the opportunity to sj last as my horse is usually far too keen & I was hoping the XC would have settled him a little. As it was he was as fresh as a daisy & having the SJ warm up right next to the XC course on Sat am just added to my problems. Managed to start off jumping a nice round & then the brakes started to fail & the poles started to fall. Ended up on 24 faults - the maximum allowed to carry on the XC
crazy.gif
To make me feel marginally better there were only 4 clears out of 60plus horses & plenty of scores worse than mine. But it didnt cheer me much.

And so eventually 2 days late we got to go XC. The course was lovely, no real worries for an experienced horse like Bruno and it had dried out a lot. My concerns were simply about the length of the course & how he would handle the big hill. Well, I need not have worried on that front. I had got him far, far too fit. He was mental, throwing himself at the practise fences & generally carting me about like some over horsed kid on a far too big pony.

When we eventually made it to the start box we came out like an exocet missile. We flew extremely literally to the highest point on the course going every short route and I really honestly thought he would settle by the top of the hill - he didnt - we started the desent at an even more rapid speed. I made it to the 2nd water which involved a small hillock & a downhill run to a rails drop into the water. At the top of the hillock the small amount of strength I had left in my arms disappeared & we ran out. I managed a whole lap of the fence & jumped parts A & B of the longer route, I then needed to turn tightly to part C. Sadly I just couldnt manage to turn anywhere nor stop & we went up a deadended chute of string, semi jumped it & got tied into a knot with the string
frown.gif
At this point I retired. I only had about 4 more fences to jump but I had lost control & it wasnt really safe to carry on.

So that really was it. Its not often with eventing that you manage to do all 3 phases quite as badly as all that. But there were a few good points along the way. I met some lovely fellow HHO's. Especially Mr & Mrs Figjam plus Nic01 & Mummy Nic01. Briefly had a chat with Punk (who isnt) and attended most parties

I have for the time being been cured of the desire to 3DE & I shall review my plans for this & future seasons when (or if!) I recover

Having had my mare run off with me cantering in a stubble field yesterday, I can understand how your brake failure was a MAJOR bummer.

Didn't Gamebird suffer with the same sort of problem at Blair last year. Ultrafit horses obviously lose their 'well behaved/slow down when mummy tells you' gene when at a 3DE.

Hope your arms recover soon, and you have a few good intermediate runs to end the season with

Aw, it was lovely meeting you (& Mr Joss of course!) and it was such a shame that you didn't complete. Having seen the way he fired out of the start box, you did well to keep the arm muscles working as far as the second water!

It's such a lot of effort for a 3DE and having your schedule messed around due to the great Scottish summer weather won't have helped at all.
frown.gif
I still reckon he needs the bigger fences to make him think/back off more!
wink.gif

Very well done for being good enough to get there in the first place though!
laugh.gif

Am currently nagging Mr FigJam for the xc photos, will get them to you asap so you can add them to your report!
smile.gif

Was lovely to meet you & Mr Joss too. Pony did indeed come out the start box like a missile, but more difficult to stop!

I think Mrs FJ & I are right, he needs 2* jumps to slow him down!
wink.gif

OMG! Joss - what a huge disappointment!!! I can't think how frustrating that must be! Our Scottish weather is totally to blame
mad.gif

I was so pleased to meet you at the HHO meeting (first water jump - ice cream stop!) the day before, and we were all so positive then!!!

Don't give up on 3-days - if only you had been in section B...............!
crazy.gif

If it is any comfort, daughter's ponio was very tired in SJ on Sunday (as was rider after the disco!) and managed to get 8 time faults for daundering around!!!
shocked.gif

It wasn't ideal in any way for your section - but well done you for baring it on here!! We'll see you at the next one!!! I hope!
grin.gif

Goodness me, that sounds like a marathon. Gamebird found herself with extremely similar problems last year I think, totally agree with Fiona on that one. Regroup, and I expect by the Spring you'll be wanting another go!

I had regular updates via H, but had also been keeping an eye on the scores. Abbi was up there camping and walking (why? I still keep asking her!). They had to abandon Scotland on Thurs night after their tents were uprooted and being blown toward a lake.

The whole weekend sounds like a very expensive muddy trial. Rather than enjoyment.

It must have felt like Ground Hog Day by the time you got to Sunday.

How disappointing
frown.gif

Sounds like circumstances were against you though, not exactly the fun, relaxed outing it was supposed to be?!!

Aww hon what a disappointment but think how well you've done to be allowed to have a go - it's not everyone who's good enough to qualify never mind nearly complete! I had a disaster too, report to follow shortly. Was great to meet all the HHoers on Friday night even though I had to split early to go to another party...
Here's to sunshine next year!

What an absolute nightmare weekend
frown.gif
I can relate to and sympathise with your dramas in each phase - been there, done that, got the T shirt
frown.gif
frown.gif
You may/may not remember that I had to retire PP at Aldon 1* last autumn with 4 fences to go - same thing, I just had no control (had been held for 15 mins and when I restarted he was mental
frown.gif
). Tried taking my gloves off and giving them to a spectator and everything! I felt so stupid and pathetic to be retiring when clear, but now, with the benefit of time and perspective, I am sharply aware that it is you and I who are the mature, sensible ones to make such a decision. But it doesn't help at the time and with all the expense and hard work involved in getting to a 3 day, you just want to cry...

Ah well, gotta put it behind you, rethink bitting regime (at least you know your fittening regime was a goodun
grin.gif
) and press on. Seems as though a few of us are having seasons to forget, just have to keep putting one foot in front of the other and telling yourself "It WILL all come together"
crazy.gif

yep, i've got the "3 rubbish phases at a 3-day" t-shirt too, gutting isn't the word, i know.
a mate had this happen at Burghley of all places, horse for the first time in his life just ran through the bridle and was utterly deaf to her aids, wanting to take everything on like a lunatic. not nice or fun for anyone.
i know it's prob cold comfort, but v well done on getting through it, and on being sensible enough to retire in one piece and go back to the drawing board. don't be put off forever, 3 days are usually fab, esp when the sun shines, must admit it's beyond vile when it does nothing but rain, and it sounds as if it was exceptionally bad up there.

Thanks folks for your kind words. It does help a bit & very interesting TableDancer. I did actually manage to learn quite a bit about the whole art of 3DE as opposed 1DE. With hindsight I should have worked him so much harder during the days I was there. However, I suppose its very unusual to have 5 days at an event before you actually get round to going XC.

I would also warn against course walks with others, it does you no good listening to other peoples worries about a course. You know your own horse & thats really all you need to know.

The wonderful Mr Fig Jam has some pics of me which I will post as soon as I get them.

Gosh that sounds utterly vile. I suppose the only saving grace is that you did not have that XC experience having done a stunning dressage test and SJed clear! Eventers are a remarkably resilient lot, and it is only a matter of time before you are telling yourself how much you learnt and how much better you'll do everything next time - because you know there will be one! And hopefully it will be sunny and nice and very much fun.

That's such a shame Joss, but you clearly did the right thing. Well done for getting him so fit though! To make nothing of THE hill is pretty amazing! I've seen some pics of Blair (I gave it a miss this year and was riding motorbikes at Aviemore!) and it looks seriously muddy
frown.gif
I'm actually quite glad I didnt do the * as I'd wanted!

You poor soul - sounds a hugely disappointing wet n miserable weekend. BUT - lots of positives, and lots which can be fixed over the winter for an early spring regroup and kick on! Hope you have had a moment or two for a medicinal glass of wine or two, and it's all feeling a little less pants. Bring on 2010.....
