Boggy mud :(

My field is officially a horrible bog with mud around 6" deep by there gate way, other parts are not too bad but still wet.
Thing is i wanted to use part of the field for making hay in summer - and worried it wont come back or will come back uneven as its sp deep, taking the horses off is not an option as i have nowhere else to put them. Any suggestions?

how big is the field?
Maybe worth trying split the field up and put a fence across so 1 bit can be rested, grass is quite strong so will come back with a good bit of sun and rain but depending on what state the field is in, then maybe have a chain harrowing session in the spring to even things out a bit and try and revive the grass a little.

I have the same problem with the paddock that my boy is in but the paddock isn't that big - well big enough for just him.

I'm wondering if I could section off a bit of it with electric tape to give the good bits a chance to be good enough in the spring, say a third.

Is there any benefit from sectioning it up now to keep good bits, there is absolutely nothing for him to graze on any of it?
 
I section my 4 acres in to 3, rotating every 4-6 weeks, and though it all looks a bit ropy in the winter, and sections look like mud baths, you'd be amazed at how well it all comes back and by the end of spring I have way too much grass.

I was surprised when I harrowed a section 2 weeks ago (sorry James - I know its not the harrowing season). I thought I had made it worse, and even in this weather, 2 weeks later and it looks so much better than before I'd harrowed.

I think do as you say, tape a bit of and leave it to rest for a week or 2, if there is nothing on any of it then he wont loose out on any of it by taking a bit out to rest.

It isnt really but as you say it does it good to go over it with a chain harrow or tine harrow like my machine, scratches out all the dead grass and airs it too, soon see a improvement in a couple of weeks.
 
Just what the forum needed, someone to answer all our winter field questions lol!!

My field is just over 3 acres and has 2 ponies and 1 horse grazing it (as from today - pony 3 went this afternoon) so would you recommened sectioning off the worst bit? how long for? till it grows back in spring?? some bits are pretty churned up

its on a natural spring and also on a hill but its wet all over

Section it off, the bit in front of the horses looks the worst bit so fence off the worst bit, as i have said it just needs a rest, as with all muddy fields all the hoof prints etc will hold water which isnt good but just leave it for a month and let it rest, you will see a diffrence and if need be come end of january/february swap over and let another bit rest.
On the subject of hay you will at some point need to have a chain harrow or tine harrow in there at some point to even it all out as mower etc wont stand upto rough terrain like that.
 
The bit in front of them has been sectioned off for a few weeks now but still gets when i have to lead the horses through and i have to wade through it with hay etc.......
will section it off down the centre at the weekend and leave it to reast untill jan/feb as you said then move them onto the rested bit then leave the rest till spring. Thanks
