Hi.
My 2 yr old appears to be finding his feet & getting a little to big for his hooves!!!
Decided he is going to be a monkey with being caught & when you do get him he has discovered how to pull away. I used to be able to stop this the odd time he did it & he would stop. But last night he did it twice & got away from me both times. (he is now about 16.1 & chunky build) After this I could'nt get anywhere him. It was windy so he was bit hyped up but clearly needs some manner's re-installing.
Has anyone tried these controlling halters etc? Did have lead rope round his nose 2nd time but did'nt really help at all.
Any tip's, hint's & advice would be super.
Thanks.

I guess first question would be is he gelded?
And use a lunge line. If he pulls away that's fine, but you still have hold of him.
Then in the school and teach him to back up, move over etc, to remind him off his ground manners.

Is it when you are bringing him in from the field? I would break the habit by taking a small skip of feed with me and letting him have a nibble as I was leading him back to the stable. There is no point getting into a bicker with them, they are too big and habits start too easily - not many will ignore food though. As he realises manners bring goodness he will hopefully stop doing it.

One of mine did this for the first time ever a couple of months ago and it was only later I was told that when the yard owner was putting him out the day before she accidentally zapped his bum on the electric - so he remembered that when I went to get him and was afraid to come through the gap again. Using food then took his mind off it and after going out and then back in without being zapped he was ok again.

I invested in a Dually for my 16.3 3y/o she is now totally differentand I use it as a conventional headcollar.

I always use a long rope too.

Thank you everybody, much appricated. He has been gelded for over a year. Had him since a foal, is well handled etc & brilliant in stable etc. Just this he has discovered when coming in. I always take feed with me when fetching them in, usually makes them come over field. X

Had same problem with 2yo wb at work. Now use be nice halter, lunge line and carry a whip just to remind her about personal space, she has totally changed

Will try the lunge line & look into the halters suggested. Will get in the arena too. Thank you again : ) x
