Reascently Lou has started bolting & bucking in the school for no apparent reason

I have had her teeth checked and new saddle, I moved her from a copper roller fulmer into an eggbutt snaffle as she is much softer in the mouth with it.

There was a shoot in the fields near us tonight so I accept that is probably why she was bolting / bucking tonight.

Do you think the rest of the time it is where she is at an addaquate level of fitness now and just feeling full of it ??

(needing a bit of reassurance atm)

My mare does bolt and buck occasionally when she is too excited specially when jumping. I do a lot of transitions and some quiet schooling to calm her down before letting her jump again.

Sorry if I sound harsh but why on earth ride when you knew there was a shoot close by and you are aware your mare is being skittish? Could have ended in a nasty accident!

When you say bolting and bucking, what is it she is complaining about? The request to do something? A misunderstanding to what you are asking? If she is truely bolting blind then how long does it take for you to get her attention again? Have you had someone on the ground watch you work her and give their view? Could you be inadvertently blocking her working forwards and so she is doing this as a complaint? How is she out hacking?

I rode 3 hours after the shoot had finished!
I dont know why she is bolting / bucking nor does my yard owner who was in the school with me today. It takes me a 20 m circle to get her listening to me again. Out hacking she is exactly the same.(full pelt, and not listening in both situations)

I have even asked a very close friend to school her for a week and she was exaactly the same for her.

I agree with transitions and getting her listening again - maybe try some double rein lunging for something different etc - helps keep their mind ticking!

When you say bolting I think of flat out, no control etc....is she bolting or just tanking/rushing a bit - don't mean to be perdantic but it does make a different....

If she's doing it when jumping then my reaction would be that she's getting excited and doesn't quite know what to do with herself!

jay is a star to school but does like to bolt out hacking.

whats your feeding like? jay used to hunt & is very strong & pulls a fair bit, if he is on anything that gives him a bit of spark hes a git to ride.

have you had her back checked?

It is total flat out no breaks. She hasn't done it jumping yet ((touch wood)) . infact the last time I jumped her she was extremely relaxed in herself and very soft in the mouth.

Her back was checked by vet (who also done her teeth),

she is on 1 h/f honneychop & 1 h/f cool mix am
and 3/4 scoop honeychop and 1/2 scoop coolmix pm

could it be the honeychop as thats what jay is on[trying to get him off it,fussy git] & he has been a nightmare since on it,when he bolts he stops when he wants to & you cant turn him or steer into something as he trys to jump it,hence why we do walk/trot hacks only just now till i get him sorted.

its not nice is it,hope you get it sorted soon xx

Ty's a TB and only has 1/2 nuts and 1/2 chaff twice a day and he does well on it!

It is a bit frustrating when you work to get them fit and then they turn a bit loopy! I'd say get her off the mix and onto nuts....no matter how 'cooling' a mix is, I've always found them to give them more energy thus a bit more fizzy....

Glad she was good today. What breed is she by the way? I know that this cold weather is really affecting my boy.

If this were me I would swop the feed for just a simple chaff such as hi-fi lite and high fibre cubes and hay. This would help to eliminate a food problem.

A fit horse should not be a naughty horse.

Maybe get in a good instructor to see you ride and who could also ride her for you. Often someone coming in who does not see the horse day to day will see something others have not.

The cold weather recently would maybe have an effect.
