So, I know this gets discussed a lot on here, so I was wondering what your horses would do in this situation...

Was hacking out today and got the bottom of the field we normally have a race up, there was a tractor in it doing farm stuff so I thought - bummer , no gallop for us today. anyway, went round the corner, Badge was being a bit of a nutter because he didn't get his run, and there was this massive digger right next to the path digging up a manure pile. Badger bricked it, so I turned round and went a different way!

So question is - would your horse have walked passed with out batting an eyelid?? If so what would it take to frighten them??

Just interested as I think all horses must be scared of something!??

IF the digger had stopped I probably could of got her past it but she would of tried to run past, snorting and shaped like a banana LOL She would of been better in company too. My girl is silly and will go mental one day and not bat an eyelid the next. I think that I would of felt her stress levels and if she was really stressed and we were on our own then I would of probably gone back a different way like you

Yes all of my riding horses would have quietly walked past - none would have batted an eyelid. I would say that probably all of my babies would lead quietly past too. I can only think of 1 horse on my farm here that may have had to be coerced into walking past and she does not belong to me.

Your just mrs bloody perfect aren't you!

replying to the subject of this thread only, i would say there is no such thing..

after reading content, i would try and pass..but if thingsgot tricky, would find an alternative route.

I wouldn't normally have turned round but he was being an idiot and I thought he was likely to bugger off somewhere at speed, so thought it safest all round to be a wimp!

Bombproof them. And keep them on our working farm - they are all used to huge machinery coming in and out of their fields and they absolutely adore the tractor!! It brings their food

. Even the babies (TBs WBs Arabs etc) swamp the gateways when they hear the tractor start up.

I took one of my 5 year olds onto the highway last weekend - he has never been on a road before but I knew he wouldn't do anything and he didn't. Massive American trucks were flying past him and he couldn't care less. I also took him over a very long bridge with a wide river underneath him; again I knew he wouldn't bother. I took one of my 4 year olds on the same ride 2 days ago; same thing, nothing bothered him.

My guys aren't scared of anything and they know fine well that I would never ever put them in danger.

Yes, my horses would have just walked calmly by without any worries. Then again, I ride quarter horses, the most bombproof horses in the world.

"Special" is the word I believe. Actually as I said in that previous thread, no I never thought I was special in the slightest before I came on here and listened to how other peoples horses behaved.

I do however adore my pertness!!

Oh cool.

What do you do to bombproof them or it it just because they see so much on the farm?

Mine would have walked past calmly - they are made to follow the tractors on the farm so moving machinery is fine

However if a herd of cows run up, one will brick himself and run away. Despite me getting him 6 cows of his very own to terrorize and learn to round up.

Usually, she would go past BUT she would have batted an eyelid

I say usually because I've come to realise if she is on a high dose of Danilon OR Bute(just found this out today

) she turns into a mad hallucinating woman that would faint if she saw a road LOL

Mine would have gone past. But it's the situation you were in: if K was feeling giddy and anticipating a gallop then we would have gone past quickly. Had he have seen the digger on the road he wouldn't have batted an eyelid.
There is no shame in avoiding a problem if you can; at least you'll live to see another day

Oh crumbs I do everything to them.....I wrote a thread about it once and some from other forums found it funny
grin.gif
....I think some from here found it interesting, or perhaps they were just being polite

.

My very latest trick is to go into their field with a fly swat and bang the metal hay feeders killing about 30 flies in one fell swoop
grin.gif
. Even my newborn and foal don't give a damn about me doing these wierd things.

Badge is a good boy really, think he's just an old fashioned county boy and is a bit scared of civilization, and 30 ton diggers apparently!

Strange though as he can go to big shows and is the most chilled person there.

Little man would have walked past. He'd probably have stopped to sniff/ lick it, but otherwise wouldnt be bothered.

Not much upsets him. A man shouting at him will have him running, but other than that he's 100%.

My mare would have walk past, no worries. What will she react to??? A sparrow in the hedge, or a strange shaped leaf on the floor, and fir trees!!!!

I would say that my horse wouldnt care, he trusts me and since Ive had him I havent put him into a situation that would cause him to doubt us. Dont know what he would be like with a stranger though.

after taking my big man out today for a long hack i would say he was pretty bombproof,we came across everything,2 tractors,2dustbin lorrys, scaffolding lorry bloody bins and rubbish bags at every driveway !! then we rode through a campsite and met lots of kids and familys walking past etc !!!!
ive only had him just over 3 weeks and he is amazing !!

If he could have seen it and had a look then he would have, but he would have been on his toes! Just the other day he pooed it at a peice of flappy metal, it was like riding bambi on ice - not nice! But ride past him on a lorry and he is fine - provided there is no noisy flappy polythene bags of death!

My horse would have gone past it without trouble...he is fine with diggers and large machinery. We hired a digger and huge dumper truck once to clear the manure in my field as a friend wanted it up the road. My horse was grazing in the same field but kept coming over to watch the digger! In the end we had to stable him because he was more or less trying to play with it and would not move out of the way for us to dig! Strange horse!
My horse gets funny about things he can't see properly making a noise or people doing odd movements that he cannot understand. But he will go forward when asked though and we get past things fairly easily...with a bit of gentle persuasion.

Cheekster would have gone by an hardly noticed it.
Now, a field full of cows = different story. As soon as he sees them his head/ears/back go up, and if one of them moves he either shoots backwards or takes off broncing. Couple of weeks ago one charged across the field at us (I was on road, post and rail fence) and he bronced for a full 100yds or so.

I am all for Tia's methods of getting horses used to things too. Whenever I have work done on my field I leave my horse in a pen around his stable and he gets used to everything...hedge trimming, harrowing, rolling and even cutting and baling! He adores the round baling machine and stands transfixed by it!!! We get a lot of aggregate lorries on our roads too, so in the early days of owning him I made sure we bumped into some.

Big horse would have walked past no problem - he is absolutely fascinated by machinery of all kinds. The other week he had to walk past a running combine with under 6 inches to spare - absolutely no problem. He used to be terrified of bikes, but he is now fine with them - I expect I used the same methods as Tia, it is simply desensitizing.

I would of made Saph go past it because otherwise she'll just get spooky at silly things to get out of working. Also I never gallop at the same place all the time.
