We have got a loan of a cob from a treking centre for my OH to ride for the summer. He is just learning to ride and wants to hack out and do some lessons. Owner has called to say there has been a change of plan and he needs to sell him on - money trouble I think. It was not official loan - just friend of a friend kinda thing so I do understand where he coming from. The horse is great - type I have found really hard to find but what would you pay for him in todays climate.

Vet has said he is about 12 but an other friend has said 9. Owner says 10!!!! He is quite heavy type, broad chested weight carrier. He he is grand to catch, tack up, feet ets. bit of a pain to load but not a major problem with two people. He is so quiet to hack with other horses but for the passed 5 years he has never been outt on his own. he has never done arena work just plodded off down the road with an american tourist trying to find his roots!!
I rode him tonight just in the field and although it was a slow start and he wanted to get back to his buddies, he wasn't bad at all. Ended up cantering up the field away from his friends and he was as good as gold. He generally doesn't like turning - this horse goes in straight lines preferabley following the butt of the horse in front but we got there after some coaxing. He is great in traffic, loves the sea and cantering on the beach and never takes off. (all done in a group though). He is 16 hh and perfect size for my hubbie. easy to tack up, easy to mount. all the thinks you want in a beginers horse.

So how much? He will take some work to get him going in the arena but from riding him tonight, I don't think it will take long. Thanks

hmmm id say 1000, dont know why. he only knows basics and is only suitable for novice riders as he wouldnt be much fun for someone who was serious as he is very laid back. just my opinion though!

Brilliant thanks for the reply. he is a hard sort to come by as people dont sell them on but at the same time he is very limited in what he can do. I think we might be able to get him for as little as 600- 800 euro but I wasn't sure if he was worth it. Hubbie hesitating as its limited as what he can do on him but my view is that you can't get a lot of horse for that money and if he is safe thats the most important thing for a beginner.

Even if your hubbie only rides him for 2 yrs - if you pay £800 for him thats just £400 a year - bargain in my opinion. You could spend months looking for something genuine and he sounds very sellable even if your other half wants to move up to something more exciting later on.

£1000 to £1500, lots of people look for this type despite their limitations

Sounds like the right horse for your hubby right now---and you can always work on his schooling. I agree with geraldgiraffe: I'd think you can sell him pretty easily later on, if your husband outgrows him.

£1000 sounds cheap to me. He sounds like he is worth his weight in gold and a bit of a blank canvas and is no age really, is he. He sounds like he would and could be snapped up by lots of people looking for a quiet weight carrier. A horse is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for one but I for one would pay top money for a horse that was safe and honest. I think if you got him for under £3000 you would be doing well.

I agree with Archiesmummy, £1000 sounds very cheap. I know prices have fallen this year, but last year a similar horse sold for £3250 on the yard I'm at (including tack and rugs). After all it's all supply and demand, and in the case of true beginners horses there's little supply and lots of demand!

He sounds a really sweet horse. If he is safe in traffic - that's worth a good couple of thousand in my book. The fact that your OH feels safe on him and he is good to do in so many ways would easily make him £2500 in my opinion.

Bombprproof cobs are in fact worth a lot of money, just have a look on the some of the websites like Horsemart and Horsequest. If they are coloured even more.

I have one, you can tack up in a howling gale in horizontal rain and ride past a tractor and he wont do a thing. Sometimes I think he is a little predictable and dull, other times I am so grateful for his lovely trusting ways.

£3,000 - £5000 is not unusual asking price for these types, though you may get a bargain with the present economic climate.

Good luck with getting him, he sounds like a real diamond.

THanks for everyones comments. Spoke to OH and he now seems keen on him. Basically I told him that if he didn't buy him, I would cos I had great fun today on him and thats the first time for the poor man to be ridden on his own. Oh he is broken to drive as well. Its up to OH now. He is still hesitating a bit but you know, its his horse so I can only advise. I will let him see the replies though so that might help!!!!

ETS: He can pop a little jump too. Nonthing major but he is grand over a little XC schooling fence.

Probably stating the obvious but get him vetted. Whilst he is appears worth his weight in gold it is strange the existing owner is prepared to almost give him away. If he passes, if he does all you say, I would snap him up.

Def sounds like a keeper to me!!! if he makes your o/h feel safe then def go for it theres too many unsuitable horses out there!!
