What is a bombproof horse/pony, i know that sounds stupid but i have four they all behave very different with my oh than they do me.

so my question is
is it the horse /pony that is bombproof or is it the owner that makes the animal so.

i feel that it really is down to the person, scared person = scared horse.

I think its the horse more then the person. In some respects I agree with scared person = scared horse but in others I dont.
For example, My mare is 15, I was terrified last year of jumping, but she had the 'don't worry mummy, I'll do it attitude' and I just sat there and learnt to jump.
However, if its something the horse hasn't done before, or the horse is young, then yes I believe he will learn his reaction (to a degree) from the person.
Sorry, I've just waffled, hope that makes sense Lol :S

I think its a bit of both. I am calm, Because I trust the horse that I ride. Which I think is the reason she was happy to pass a tractor and horsebox at the same time. But if I was scared then Im pretty sure she would of played up.

I don't think any horse is bombproof, they're animals and can all be unpredictable. I would say my pony is pretty much spook-free, but then he had a meltdown last week about the smell of pig poo.

However, I don't think that scared rider necessarily equals scared horse. With my pony the more nervous the rider, the steadier he is. I have clung on to his mane in tears before while he just sighs and takes over and stays perfectly calm, but he will see what he can get away with if he has a confident rider on him. He picks up on nervous people and looks after them.

Nowt to do with rider.

Think there are prob 3 main categories:

'nervous wreck' - skittery with anyone on, worse with nervous rider;

'Normal' - generally sensible, but may get worried in some situations, exaccerbated by nervous rider possibly;

'Bombproof' - unflappable in all circumstances with all riders, short of some sort of nuclear attack! (that's not to say they won't 'act up' with a good rider on board at times, this type often have a strange/wicked sense of humour)!!

I have a bomb proof! Totol darling who used to gently walk me around muttering 'there, there' while I sobbed with fear and curled up in the feotal position on her back (long story). Same horse charged across the arena with my riding instructor on her back the same week making a holy show of her in front of HER instructor!

but those pesky mole hills at the side of the road are deadly horse-eating monsters and mean we must dance sideaways accross the road snorting!!

It seems to depend on my horses mood. You can put a kiddy/learner on him and he's good as gold. But if some-ones sort of the in-between stage of total beginner and experienced he's not suitable- just takes the mickey. He will act on it if I get tense/nervous, he becomes the same but 99% of the time he's fine- we've kept him opposite army barracks, golf courses, on farms, livery yards, the lot and he doesn't bat an eyelid. I was so proud o fhim yesterday- big gsd standing on it's back legs, launching itself at it's gate barking it's head off and he totally ignore it

(Tho' then spooked at the straw bales in the field. Which were obviously going to eat him. Doh!
