Hi All,

I'm looking for some hope today, 4 weeks ago my 3YO welsh Sec D suddenly became Lame, had vet out and he couldn't figure out what was wrong, he gave him 10 days box rest and Bute. When he came out no better I took him up to the practise for x rays.

They have found a large chip on his rear fetlock with bone deterioration surrounding it along with a perforated joint capsule. The vet has advised me its only going to get worse and his potential ridden career is over before it has begun.

Her exact words where if he was 15 yo id tell you to put him to sleep. Safe to say I was absolutely devastated and completely shocked as I never thought it would be this sever.

I am waiting for the x rays to be reviewed by orthopaedic specialist at Leahurst so I am still hoping and praying for a miracle.

Has anyone else ever had experience with this? success stories?

I have no experience but just wanted to say how very sorry I am to hear of this. I hope the review of the xrays at Leahurst will provide a better prognosis for him. I think the main problem would be the perforation to the joint capsule more than anything, maybe it is for this reason that you have been given such a poor prognosis.

Hi All,

Had the reports back from Leahurst and there is hope, they want to operate to remove the chip, once they are in there they will be able to look at potential Ligament damage that they are concerned about. Only then will they be able to provide me a concrete diagnosis of his future.
They have also said there is a 50/50 chance of early onset Arthritis due to his young age, can anyone recommend supplements or anything that I can start to give now to prevent it as long as possible?

I've read good things about turmeric being given to help inflammation/arthritis/other mobility issues. See if you can join the Facebook Turmeric Users Group. Lots of info and it's run by a vet. Sorry to hear about your youngster. What a blow. Best wishes for his future recovery and good luck.
