I was wondering whether anyone had any experience of bone cysts in horses, and if so what the outcome/treatment/prognosis was for the horse in question???

This horse is a beautiful three year old who underwent keyhole surgery to flush the area of the cyst with steroids (I think) back in March 2008 and came sound following this. However, the sypmtoms have reoccurred and the 'local' vet thinks it is the same thing and wants him to go back to Leashurst for more xrays etc.

The owner is one of my very good friends, so I am hunting everywhere for information for her... so any information you have would be incredibly helpful because there is little on the internet so far!

Thanks to you both... have been forwarded onto my friend.

I have found a few articles on the vet journal websites, but even though I have an athens username they won't allow me access because it has to be a veterinary access

Hi
My eventer was diagnosed with a bone cyst in his stifle in june last year, he had key hole surgery to remove the cyst and the joint was injected with steroid, his rehab was going well untill i started riding him again. At which point he want lame. So the vet reinjected the stifle with steroid and re x-rayed. The progniosis at that stage was guarded so i decided to turn him away. unfortunately he became stiff on the leg last weekend and was re-xrayed on thursday, where arhritic changes could be seen in the joint and there was no further options so he was very sadly put to sleep.

He was 9 years old and the older they are the less likely the cyst is to fill back up with bone, i have come across one other case and unfortunately they had the same out come. The horse you are talking about is much younger so fingers crossed.

hi, my horse has been recently diagnosed with OCD. what happened to your friends horse, i need all the advice and knowledge i can get. Did it re occur?

Perissa was interested to read your story - my horse has just been diagnosed with a cyst in his shoulder and compared to the stifle on in the foot they are much rarer, they have seen so few of them (he's about the 3rd or 4th ever at the RVC) they can't give any sort of prognosis.

He's older than yours was so that doesn't help and they have medicated the shoulder initially with the option of operating open at the moment.

my horse has OCD in both his stifles. diagnosed aged 8. he was my hunter. unfortunately he's not sound despite arthroscopy and a year off so he's now a light hack only.

I dont believ bone cysts carry a great prognosis unfortunately :( they do tend to recur despite treatment.

I wonder if the 'local' vets are the same ones that saw my mare yesterday - and they mentioned to me a horse that they are currently treating with a bone cyst as my mare apparently is showing a lot of the same lameness issues etc.

From my very brief googling, i found an article that said that the prognosis is much much much better for youngsters than older ones (whereby only 1/3 come sound after treatment).

Hope they manage to get it resolved.

My friend's horse had one in her shoulder. If I understood and remember correctly, it was removed surgically. She followed all the re-hab but a year later the horse went lame again and it had grown back bigger. :(
