Hiya,

just wondering whether anyone has any experience of horses with bone infections? What was the treatment and did they recover? did the horse return to normal and what is the long term prognosis?

Thankyou!!!

dont know about horses, but humans with bone/joint infections is difficult to treat, long term antibiotics (6 months)

Friend had a horse with a kick to its hock that got infected, Sadly the horse was pts.
Sorry to sound quite negative!

Is it your horse??

mmmmmmmmmmm it all depends on what the infection is, how deep, and is horse responding to drugs.........

Sorry to say very serious, you really should to talk to your vets

My horse had a bone infection in his splint bone, he was operated on to remove it but unfortunately it grew back. He originally was treated with Baytril (I think) which isn't licenced in horses which didn't work and after surgery was treated with 2 different types of antibiotics daily (injected). He eventually shook it off but still has a lump where the splint bone should be, however he is completely sound and I am compete at elem BD so there is hope. I should mention that the infection also kicked off lamintis due to the toxins and he has suffered from bouts of this ever since. It is extremely harrowing but was worth all the heart ache but as others said really depends where the infection is etc. Hope that helps a little.

i had a mare who was injured when away at stud years ago (they put her in a barn with about 20 mares who had wintered over together... durrrrr... she put her hindlegs through the wall trying to kick her way out, and sliced a piece of cannon bone off.) the bone was infected when i got her home months later (they didn't tell me. nice.) it took a few vets visits and a lot of antibiotics but it healed perfectly.
