Been having a rough time with my mare, she has been having uncontrolable outburts both ridden & unridden, following the vets assesment she went in to RVC on monday after a very trumatic journey (she had 2x outburts whilst travelling, during one she cut her forehead open) to get there, she had her bone scan yesterday and last night a lovely vet called me to explain the findings... she had 2 severe hot spots affecting two vertebrae high up in her neck. He suspects either fractures or arthritis as a result of old fractures.
Once she is no longer radio active, she will be sedated again and taken for xrays of the area. His main concern is spinal cord damage as he feels her "outbursts" could be result of the spinal cord being pinched.
I dont really know how I feel however, surgury will not happen if it is an option, anyone had any experiences?
In a way i'm relieved they found something as it confirms my thoughts... that she was getting worse and that it wasnt just me being silly.

hi

i'm kinda going through a similar situation at the moment. my horse is severly lame when ridden only and he is now booked in for bone scans next week. arthritis in the neck is also something that has been mentioned to me. they explained once they find any hot spots they will then be x rayed for a more thourough diagnosis. my vet has said that normally arthritis in the neck is the end of a ridden career, not sure what other vets would say tho.

Me too.

X rays along mare's back has shown 2 spiny bits touching, but after numbing it, she was worse... so vet now wants to do Bone Scan to see what else is wrong.

Sadly following xrays they showed up nothing vets advise was it was damage/pinching of the spinal cord...after lots of discussions it was decided that the kindest thing for her was to go and join her son over rainbow bridge it will be 2 wks ago on Thursday and it still doesn't seem real :(
