I'm not sure this is the case but I haven't ridden Fred for six months after the vet advised me to rest him for six months prior to more flexion tests, x rays, nerve blocking etc. For the last couple of days I have noticed that he is definitely putting equal weight on all legs which he never did, his back legs never seemed to settle and he was constantly resting his near hind. He seems a lot less stiff and seems happier within himself

Do you think that giving him this time off would actually help with fusion?? I was always told you had to ride them through the fusion stage!! Very confusing but there is definitely some change for the better

Yes, over time the bone will fuse itself - it just depends on the horse, but that is the natural healing process, as the lower hock joint becomes one. Mine didn't, and therefore I went down the surgery route, and it has now healed, but its totally possible (and really good news!) if this has happened!

Would be great if that had happened - good luck! Then you can get back on with it and enjoy it! Good time of year as well - my one went lame just coming into summer 2006 (it was VERY warm that summer) and had to be on box rest for 6 weeks after surgery = one very grumpy pony!

Let us know! When are you getting the x-rays done and are you going to an equine hospital? (My local vet only had a little x-ray machine which didn't really show enough detail - where she had the surgery done they had an x-ray room....quite intimidating, pony was sedated but I think I was scared of the big arm coming towards us...oops, I have digressed... !)

Your poor horse!! I bet he was ecstatic when he was turned out again!! Are you riding him/her again??
I hope so too but i'm not going to get my hopes up. It just seems very odd that he has all of a sudden started standing very balanced and doesn't rest his legs anymore!!
I'm hopefully taking him up to the vets next week and people I have spoken with have said the facilities are very good. It's called 'Kessock Equine Vets' near Inverness??
I'm a little scared of the xray room myself but I will definitely let you know how things go.
Thankyou very much

Thats brilliant news for fredthoroughbred.
My horse had surgery like yours 6 weeks ago but I wanted to ask you if you had xray done after surgery ie after he returned to work.I have the vet out on the 19th hopefully to start riding again .Just wondered if they bother doing x rays and at what point in time post surgery.
thanks

Good news with your horse.
re xrays my horse was sedated then taken in I wasnt allowed with him for safety reasons. He will be fine dont worry my boy is a tb and he behaved very well took it all in his stride I was really proud of him

ahhhhhh....Fred is a very well behaved beasty most of the time so hopefully he will be ok too!! I can't wait to get the results and by the sound of things, bone spavin can cure itself!! I thought I was imagining things haha

Hi again. Yes, she had the surgery June 2006, had xrays in November 2006 and then in April 2007. I think it is worth having them done after just to check how the fusion is coming along. I think we have discussed this before, but have you started riding again?

Damn, now can't remember what the other question was!

Yup - pony came back into work last March...so a year ago. Is totally sound, does SJ, XC, etc... well, she did at the loan home, I am much more relaxed and like to go for nice hacks instea. but can get a bit funny behind if doesn't wear natural balance. Cellie, has anyone said this to you?

Nope, no idea where that is (well, aside from Inverness!). We are down in South East!

Check up on the 19th which will be 8 weeks after surgery.
My surgeon has said he expects I will be able to start riding then.I spoke to you before surgery I can remember you saying pony returned to full schedule which is good news .Fingers crossed for 19th then another set of xrays -more money lol.Hope this cures everything hes been a complete disaster area over the last 2 years tendon ligament and more.thanks for info

I was told by vet to retire my boy partly due to spavin and partly a stifle injury...

He had other ideas and is sound and fit for duty after 18 months off on the sick with a stifle problem! He became stiffer without ny riding, even light pootling about.

He is given newmarket joint supplement or cortavet to maintain some flexibility.

Good luck wth fredthoroughbred. xx
