Hi everyone,
Would love some advice on this....
My 2.5yr old home bred had a field injury about a year ago... at the time we xrayed it etc, and saw that the tarsal bones had been damaged (looked like they were blurry around the edges on xray). The vet explained that it was like a bone spavin.
From memory, I think it was the 1st one under the hock that looked damaged.
We decided to have surgery on it, to take out the cartilage in between the tiny bones, so that they would fuse together more rapidly.
This surgery was done in April 2010. He then stayed in on box rest for about a month, then went out in a tiny paddock for about 2 weeks, then into a large paddock with other horses, in the hope that if he cantered around and played enough on the leg that it would traumatise the area enough to aid the fusion of the bones, to make him sound.
This was now a good 6months ago, and to begin with he was as lame as anything, then he became sound in walk... and it looking a lot better in trot also, but not 100%
How long do we think this could take?! Does anyone have similar experience of this to me?!
I am now torn as to what to do with him... whether to leave him totally alone and have a look at him next Spring, or whether to start bitting him and putting bridle on, lunging etc, in case he comes sound.
He was bred for me to event, so if he doesn't come 100% sound then I will have to have him euthanised I think, as he wouldn't be able to do the job he was bred for, and he has such good breeding it would be too sad to see him bored as a field companion or such like.
If he comes sound over this winter then that would be fab, and then if I havent done anything with him, come the spring, I will have a lot to do and will wish that Id had started sooner!
Feel like Im in a catch 22!
On the up side hes well handled (was bathed, plaited etc from 6wks old for showing) and with this injury has obviously had lots more handling than most babies!
Please help!!! Thanks
