Hi there

My horse has just been diagnosed with bone spavin in both hocks. He is in the vets getting them injected and I understand that I need to work him regularly through winter to help the joints fuse.

Problem is, I work 9-5.30 in the city so am not home til gone 7pm. My horses currently live out as I am renovating a property which doesn't yet have stables or an arena...

Has anyone had the same issue? How did you manage to work your horse enough?
Thanks!

Will he be living out all winter as this might be a good idea to stop him stiffening up as they tend to do in a stable. If he is to be stabled, then I would recommend getting someone to exercise him

My boy has had injections for bone spavins, this was about 5 years ago and we hasn't looked back since.

Yes he'll be out so that will be better. I could put him on livery and have access to a school and be stabled or have him turned away with limited exercise.

That's a good idea about paying someone to exercise him. Wonder where I would find someone who wasn't just a wannabe if that makes sense?

If you have had the fusion using ethanol you are on to a winner! My horse responded very well to it and his hocks have both fused. Much more effective than Tildren or normal joint injections, for my boy anyway.

If he's able to live out all winter, then ridden exercise wouldn't be crucial. My old boy has arthritis in multiple joints, and he lives out 24/7 happy as Larry.

It was a steroid beginning with an "M", mixed with an antibiotic. Can't remember the name of it but when I googled it last night I couldn't find it with reference to horses but got loads of body building forum results ;)!

Yes he has lived out for a couple of years now and I think this is why his fusion has got to 80% without anyone noticing! Hopefully that will help his exercise, if only I were a kept lady and didn't have to work!
