Toothman pointed this out to me today. No wonder the horse has been grumpy.
Has anyone else had experience of this?
Have been advised to have x-rays, will be phoning the vets tomorrow.

My horse had a bone spur a few years ago now. I bought her with it not knowing what it was at 1st even passed the vetting with no notes from the vet about it. In time the bone spur started to grow and caused a few problems, as she some times knocked it on the stable door, making it scab-up and bleed also interfered with the nose band (doing the nose band up) she went to the equine hospital were x-rays were taken, then the following day the vet removed the bone spur very easy by making a small incision and tapping out the hanging bone, then a few stitches and all o.k. The vet said most bone spurs can be a cause of trauma and if left untreated can grow in size also if removed can also grow back... but am glad to say with my horse the bone spur has gone for good. Just to also say that the bone spur never made my horse grumpy :)

Perhapes you should try using a bitless. Bits are normally a cause in this place of the mouth. He may have had a rider be too rough with the bit, so this causes damage and more bone to be layed down. Would be quite painful to have a bit rest on it.
