We currently have a horse on trial with a view to buy. He is about 6, and in a lean condition. We only noticed when we got him home that if you run your hand along the underside of his neck, from his head, towards his chest, about 6 inches down, there is a long thin bumpy mass - probably about 3 inches long. It seems to be on his windpipe - ie. you can't move it about. It feels like you would expect bone to feel (but is obviously not) and he is not bothered by it. I wonder whether it could be 'scar tissue', or something as he also has a small indentation on his chest. He is only in light work and he doesn't make a noise and it certiainly does not affect his eating - he has the capacity of a small elephant!

Any ideas or suggestions. Obviously, we will have the vet check him out prior to making any decisions, just wondered what you all make of it.

Thanks in advance

One of my horses has this and when she was vetted I was told this is totally normal and nothing to worry about, but make sure you raise it with the vet at the vetting to be on the safe side

One of my horses has this, although it only appeared when he was quite old. It never affected him, but I have noticed recently that it has got bigger, but since he is retired in the field that isn't a problem really. I would check it out with your vet though, especially since this horse is only 6.
