Bonfire night should be banned

I like fireworks, so certainly wouldn't call for it to be banned.

It baffles me that they are sold to the public however. I would like to go to a display and enjoy it rather than having to sit in & mind a doped up dog & the horses (who granted don't bother much but I'm always terrified something hits our stables).

The ban of sale to the public would deal with most of your concerns.

Ditto

I do think those kin chinese flying lanterns should be banned outright, they look like giant used jonnies in hedgrows and fields etc

Sorry- definitely don't agree!!!

I agree organised displays only and fireworks shouldn't be sold easily, however if you ban bonfire night where do you stop? Fireworks are used for all sorts of occasions: Bonfire night, Diwali, New Year, birthdays, weddings, other celebrations etc.

I would like it however if fireworks weren't set up for 2 weeks before and after 5th November though!! :p

This is what I feel as well, they are sold over the counter to jo public and this is the reason why we have them most of the year, any excuse and lets let off fireworks, so now they really are not that special to see because they happen all through the year.

How many times do we see and hear horror stories about people being burnt and worse, this would not happen if they were only shown at a proper event.

I love fireworks and love the look on my kids faces. What should be banned is the private sale of fireworks. We should all be encouraged to go to organised events only.

Better value for money
Safe
Good hot dog stalls
Happy kids
!!!

I don't understand why people are setting them off on a tuesday night when the 5th is a Saturday?

Agree with banning from public sale though- will sign the petition when I'm on a laptop tomorrow.

I can't help thinking "Killjoy", Why do some people always want to ban something? It's an irritant but not something I can't ignore and my horses don't seem to care, they stand in the field watching us in the next field, where we build a huge bonfire and let off lots of fireworks with oour neighbours.

I like bonfire night. The horses are not bothered at all by fireworks as used to loud bangs....

I remember one year i was riding on bonfire night and literally as i finished my run through of the dressage test i was practicing and halted, a huge fireworks display was set off so i just stood there with Blue watching - he was watching too :) magic!

I love a bit of bonfire, all the villages round here take it in turns to have a display every Saturday between late September- end of November. Horse isn't fussed by fireworks really, but have just moved her to a new yard close to a massive display, so will have to see.

Don't really see any reason to ban fireworks just because a few people do dangerous things with them- far more people drive dangerously and no-one is getting up a petition to ban cars!

I am bothered by them. Was driving home a few days ago when suddenly fireworks appeared from behind house at side of road with a loud bang - almost jumped out my skin and got that hot and cold feeling. Fortunately, it did not cause me to drive unsafely, but I could do without that kind of fright while in the car.

Another one who would like to see it made more difficult for the general public to buy them over the counter. I do love going to an. organised display though, thankfully my horse doesn't care about them!

Last year some dicks were letting really loud banging ones off at 2.00 am, yea and not even near the 5th :mad::mad: they are dangerous explosives and should not be sold to the public, organised displays I have no problem with, alcohol and joe ******** public can't be trusted with them, the burns fireworks give are not the same as just burning yourself on a bonfire or cooker, they are chemical.

Ban the sale to the public and leave it too the professionals.

I hate bonfire night, i have to take the dogs up to OH;s house because the pub near us has huge fireworks, while he babysits the horses.
I am hopping that this year people will feel to poor to think about setting fire to hundreds of pounds..... what a waste of money!
People are inconsiderate and dont inform neihbour, and we have had kids letting off fireworks in the field, it took me nearly a year to get the Arab right after that!
There needs to be an expensive safety test or simular before you are alowed to buy or set off fireworks, and they should not be sold from any old shop!

Christmas should be banned.
time to spend money you dont have
presents for people you wouldnt normally do
time to drink to much
anti social behaviour
eat to much
what is there to like
spend hours of precious time in the shops
hours queuing in car parks
hours thinking what to buy
loads poor birds die

oh yes one good thing spend time with my parents that's it
:) Christmas for me is 1 day only the rest is crap a day like any day including boxing day new years day

god i be glad when christmas is behind us ;)

I agree with most of you - I don't think there should be a complete ban but only licensed people should be allowed to use them.

A gang of teenage boys once threw a firework into the middle of our group of ponies. It was a miracle none of them were injured. The poor things were terrified of everyone for ages afterwards :(

ok

first of all I am not a fan of fireworks although I can understand their attraction

but

just a few thoughts ....

do they need banning for some of the reasons given ?

because people get burnt .... well yes they do as I well know as I have nursed in both casualty unit and burns unit. However I have seen far worse and prob far more / widespread burns from BBQs tbh. Idiots can throw lighter fluid / alcohol etc on a bbq or bend over it in nylon shirts  just the same as idiots can be unsafe with fireworks. Ban one and not the other  ...illogical if we use that reasoning ;)

because they frighten horses .... well yes some horses. However it is possibile to habituate horses to loud bangs at least ( oh they will jump at the first one like we all do when we dont know its coming but then they can calm quicker). If we also know that people do not restrict themselves to nov 5th and new year to set the things off or dont inform all and sundry what is planned .....then it is unrealistic imo to think that the solution to the problem is to sedate our horses because sooner or later we will either not be there or have no prior notice to get it set up.

I am not arguing against a ban........... just saying that its highly unlikely in the forseeable future so we just have to do the best we can to minimise the effect on us and our animals and not rely on joe public to think about us.

I would LOVE to ban christmas - but I like bonfire night!! I do feel that a total ban on fireworks to the general public is in order and it should be organized displays only.

Love the thought of trying to explain bonfire night to someone who has never heard of it before.

"We let of explosives, set massive fires and burn effigies to celebrate the caputure, torture and execution of an activist from a minority religious group"

Er yeah sounds like fun

As an American, I'm only partially aware of Bonfire Night (know who Guy Fawkes was and what he did, know it's celebrated with fireworks but not up on details).

But your post made me laugh and reminds me of how ridiculous so many things sound when you try to explain them to someone who has no inkling of them. Not to pick on religion but religious beliefs are baffling if presented as matter-of-factly as you described bonfire night above.

One thing that I like about the 5th Nov is that's the day in 2007 i went under the knife to remove cancer from my womb .

so every year 5th Nov is another year the cancer hasn't come back .
:D

We either or rarely drive up an park on the verges and watch the display from the car. more often than not we just stay home .

I was pretty horrified a few years back at the idiocy of some people. I rented a large field, adjacent to the village green where I lived. The (arable) farmer I rented the field from rang me up at 5pm to say that I needed to make sure that the electric fence I had splitting the feld in two was turned on, and that my horses were in the far end - as he had agreed to let the village bonfire/fireworks display take place in the end nearest the green - starting at 6pm!

I explained in words of one syllable how unimpressed I was - to be met with a mouthful of abuse! I had to rally the troops at high speed to come down and hang onto a 2yr old each while the display took place! The horses were amazingly cool about it, after a few initial wobblies, but I moved out a few days later...

I think you were extremely calm, I would have wanted to kill him, can't believe that some people are THAT stupid!

Didn't have time to have a tantrum!!

Was quite amazed at the nags - they settled very quickly, and were fascinated by the bonfire/fireworks. Something to be said for teenage German tourists!! Had more trouble with the dog!

yep just like explaining easter to someone who didn't know;) we like to celebrate the fact a bloke got nailed to a cross and died for his beliefs;)

the fact is most of the fireworks that get let off by the teens round here are big display ones that have come off the back of a lorry not from shops.
I don't want a ban but more control would be a good idea:)

Well...we had a fireworks display and bonfire last night. Not on the 5th (as I prefer to watch Chatsworth's ;) ) in a field right next to the horses. I let the owner know, she was there feeding them at the firework time...nothing happened. The world did not end. Happy people all round.

Bonfire night shouldn't be banned as it is tradition, but only professionally organised displays should be available. It would then stop all the problems we get running up to 5th nov.
They should ban chinese lanterns, HATE HATE HATE them !!!

Yes but we don't do we? We celebrate him rising again!

Easter Sunday is Resurrection Day, and that is the day that we celebrate with the giving of easter eggs which symbolise new life and the reawakening of spring.

Jesus was crucified on Good Friday, which isn't a day of celebration as such.

The point of easter isn't that Jesus was executed, it is that Jesus gave his life for the rest of us.
