Evening all,

My horse had her routine dental check about a month & a half ago and the EDT found her to have some ulcers caused by sharp edges and quite a nasty sore/bruise on the inside right hand side of her mouth and a smaller sore/bruise developing on the left also. The teeth were rasped and I was recommended to give her a few days off for the ulcers, however the sores/bruising would take longer. I have since swapped to a thinner bit on his advice as the bit/s I had previously been using were too thick for the conformation of her mouth.

I explained to the EDT I had been having problems with her leaning, and being strong- particularly heavy/resistant on the right rein (Bends much easier to the left) which would explain why she was getting heavier and heavier (pushing into the soreness/pressure in her mouth)

So, gave her a week off just to be sure and she has been going very well. However, yesterday & today she has resorted to being heavier (particularly on the right) so Im going to check her mouth 2moro for any pressure sores. I wondered if anyone has used bonjela/or could suggest an alternative to soothe sores inside the mouth? If anyone else has experienced similar issues, Id be interested to hear.....:)

Just to add: I am a fairly competant rider & my seat is independant, however my horse is very head strong (possibly because she is expecting pain, where the injury was- bit of a catch 22 situation!:( hence the bruising!
Her back has also recently been checked to ensure its not a back/hindquarter issue causing heaviness in right hand.

Can't comment on horses but I advise humans to consider using corsodyl gel or gengigel gel for ulcers rather than bonjela.

thankyou for replying :)

Its more for the sores than the ulcers as the EDT said they should clear up quickly now that the sharp edges have been removed. Im a bit stumped for ideas, as I COULD give her a good few weeks off, but if she goes back to pulling/leaning (which she may well do, anticipating pain) we are back to square one. Having my 2nd dressage lesson next weekend so any part of the equation that is training related is being tackled also.

Could you ride her in a hackamore meantime to give the bit lesions a chance to heal completely? Sealtex Latex bandage cut into strips then wrapped around the bit help prevent lesions with my horse.

Thanks scatterbrain. Ive thought about a hackamore but worry about brakes, would definitely give it a try in the school though if I could get my hands on one. I might ask around and see if anyone has one I could borrow. One of my instructors is pretty good for lending equipment so might ask her too. The sealtex latex bandage sounds good too, will give that a go.....willing to try anything to make her comfortable :)
