Toff went off Hifi Lite so I moved her over to D&H Fibergy about 10 days ago and she loves it, however the last week or so she has been a tad bonkers! Jogging all the time hacking and pulling my arms out, also has reared a few times. I had checked the protein levels in the chaffs but didn't check the oil, it's just under 8% oil, where as the Hifi Lite is 1.5%....could this be what's making the difference? I am experimenting and have bought some Mollichaff Apple which is 0.7% oil to see if she chills out a bit. Does it usually have this effect or is this a coincidence?
Mind you, it was lovely have the speed to SJ on Sunday, for first time ever got placed!!!

Just a bit hairy for general day to day hacking...

i think they are all a bit bonkers at the mo!! my welshie is coming back into work and is like a lunatic, and even the lazy cob was rushing about tonight!

The culprtit is more likely to be another ingredient... not the oil. In some high oil feeds they use quite a bit of molasses (sugar) to make it more palitable. Also watch the cerial levels. If it contains alfalfa this could well be the source of your troubles, quite a few horses qet fizzed by it.

Also bear in mind that the cooler weather makes horses feel more comfortable, so they are more enthusiastic. Irregular/less exercise and limited turnout can also make them have power surges.

As Fibergy is a chaff I hardly think cereal levels will be a problem

And I'd also disagree about the alfalfa making horses fizzy.
The energy levels of the Fibergy may well be higher, although I doubt that it's a significant difference(haven't looked it up so not completely sure there!)

She could just be feeling well within herself. SWUO is fed very little yet is high as the proverbial kite atm!

Alfalfa is well known for fizzing SOME horses. There was a very good illustration of this a couple of years ago.

In the USA alfalfa is fed much more widely than here. Horses seen or sold from the UK as novice rides, bombproof etc were then fed alfalfa when they were exported to the USA. There was a massive outcry that these horses from the UK were not as described... they turned in to nutters. There were even court cases and several UK exporters nearly had their reputations destroyed until the change in diet was spotted. No more alfalfa for those horses!

I have no idea what is in fibergy, but as the owner of an EPSM horse I know you have to watch seemingly innocent products for megga levels of sugars and starches. All sorts of stuff can lurk in chaffs, They have to put something in the stuff to make it tasty!

Thanks all, the Hifi she was on before has Alfalfa in it so don't think it would be that (this is fed at 1kg a day as a partial hay replacer).
It may be the weather/time of year but despite usually being more lively in winter, she is naturally lazy and not normally "stupid" in her fizziness like she has been lately!
I will experiment with another chaff and if still the same I will know it's the time of year. Can't complain she is feeling well really as she's 17 and obviously having fun but I would like *some* control

QR I have a horse that cant handle pure alfalfa.

Mollichaff have a nice chaff out-no molasses in it either. called High Fibre Alfalfa and seems very palatable as mine started refusing Happy Hoof et al last year

my horse goes crazy on any kind of mollassed chaff, you could try spillers cool fibre. it shouldnt contain anything that could cause a horse to fizz up, my horse does very well on it
