I'm lacking reading material at the moment, so thought I would ask you lot which doggy books you rate highly :) Be it training, behaviour, books on canine sports, breed specific (particularly if it's GSD's :p ), or even vetinary/physiology type tomes.

And of course, which books you would stay clear of/happily burn!

I would start, but I don't own a single doggy book to recommend... They're all about horses, and cats.... :o

If you like GSD's there's a lovely book called Twenty wagging tales by Barrie Hawkins. It's about a couple who rescue and rehome GSD's xx

So That Others May Live: Caroline Hebard & Her Search And Rescue Dogs by Caroline Hebard, I'm reading that at the moment.

Joyce Stranger wrote a few on her working dogs, including her GSDs, Three's a Pack and Two For Joy among others. She owned a female jointly bred by MM's Mum :D

Can't recommend The Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson enough, she doesn't like people like me who use what she calls 'strangle collars' but gives a great, no nonsense insight into how dogs think and how we try (stupidly) to give them human feelings and emotions.

The German Shepherd Dog (my bible!) and German Shepherd Dogs: An Owner's Companion by Brian H. Wootton, Understanding the German Shepherd Dog by John Cree, The Complete German Shepherd by Nem and Percy Elliot and any of Dr Willis' books, if you can get hold of them!

Twenty Wagging Tails sounds like a good one for a rainy afternoon :) And both of Wootton's books are only 65p each in good condition hard back on amazon marketplace.... so it would just be plain RUDE not to get them.... And I've heard good things about The Culture Clash before so I really probably need that one, rather than just WANT it....

God bless one click ordering, you don't even really need to look at what you've spent :D

Going to have to compile a list to work my way through at this rate :D

Ditto CCs recommended list, Joyce Stranger also wrote loads of fiction books, very light but easy reading, Never Count Apples is about GSDs (based on a litter we had). With regard books to stay clear of, Madeleine Pickup was a lovely lady but her books (factual) about GSDs are a bit twee, include things like biscuit recipes for dogs.:p

Was browsing Joyce Stranger and noticed she wrote the House of Secrets books. I read them as a child and loved them, had forgotten all about them until now. Will have to pick up Never Count Apples out of simple nosiness I think :D

Loki would no doubt greatly appreciate a book containing biscuit recipes. And when he learns to read himself and work an oven I may even consider it :p

Mother Knows Best (oh flip, can't remember who it's written by) is a very old-fashioned but good training book. Also, I read Harley and Me before it was made into a film. It was a good read but I had to read the tear-jerker bits a page at a time with a gap inbetween cos my little heart couldn't take it (so be warned!)

Not a training manual but if you like chic lit, I was given a book I read on holiday called 'Lost dogs and lonely hearts' by Lucy Dillon.

It's about rehoming dogs and was surprisingly good. also really good section on rescue orgs and warnings on puppy farms at the back of the book :)
