Hello,

Interested in purchasing the two books below. Has anyone read them. Trying to find out what his main principles are regarding horse's diet and hoof care.

Founder: Prevention and Cure - The Natural Way (Paperback)
by Jaime Jackson

Horse Owner's Guide to Natural Hoof Care (Paperback)
by Jaime Jackson

Have posted in veterinary, but more people to comment on here.

Thanks for any comments.

I'd get Nic and Sarah's book too - its written by people who have years of experience of horses in the UK which is quite a bit different environment wise to the USA. Its written in a very easy to read way which gives it a huge advantage IMO

I was lucky enough to get "Feet first" by Nic Barker and Sarah Brathwaite for Christmas and I am finding it a very useful book and full of good advice etc. on issues involved with barefootedness!
It also has a list of websites dedicated to barefoot horses etc.

I am currently weighing up the pros and cons of trying barefoot for my ned!

Horse Owner's Guide to Natural Hoof Care (Paperback)

I have this book and it's pants. It's hard to get your head around what he is going on about... (IMO)

Someone suggested to me this book the other day and it looks much better and appears to have everything you need to know in:

I've just dug Jaime J's book out and I'm struggling to find anything on diet, infact there is only 4 small paragraphs on diet and at the end of the last para he fobs you off to go and buy another book for indepth detail on exactly what a barefoot horse should be consuming

LOL

LOL - Jaime Jackson pioneered barefoot and natural hoof care and indeed trained both authors of Feet First... so everything in Feet First is inspired by his teaching (and others too but he was the first person who posited that horses could perform barefoot).

His Founder book should be required reading for all horse owners and is truly brilliant. That does have lots of info on diet. His Natural Hoof Care book is also a bible but is quite technical in parts - much more technical than Feet First, which is also great but quite simplistic (as it should be being an introductory text - that's not meant as an insult).

If you're totally new to the concepts I'd probably read Feet First, first, then if I wanted to find out more detail I'd read JJ's books.

And of course the environment in the UK is different to some parts of the US (not all - many parts of the Eastern US are very similar in having lots of mud and lush grass) but the concepts are the same wherever the horse lives.

I'd also recommend JJ's Paddock Paradise book. This management system is mentioned briefly in Feet First but again if you want to find out more go to the source.

Another great book is Pete Ramey's Making Natural Hoofcare Work for You.

For even more indepth detail on NHC and the surrounding issues these series of articles are the most up to date, but they aren't light reading and probably better read once you've already got a more basic understanding:

Enjoy!!

Thank you so much for your comments. Also thanks to Lucyfer for actually looking in the book for me. Tried the Amazon link to look inside the book but it was 'unavailable at this time'. Nothing else apart from 6 reviews of the book.

I was given 'Feet First' as a Christmas present. I have already read it twice and find it fascinating. Was hoping the book by Jaime Jackson would give me more information along the same lines as Feet First, although I realise it is American. I'm a bit of an information junkie when researching ideas.

Many thanks again. I find you all so kind and helpful.

i think the book you are on about by JJ is brilliant as is his founder book & paddock paradise. after reading the books by JJ and Pete Ramey, i made my decision to go barefoot with 2 of my horses that were having problems and subsequently all 5 of mine are now barefoot.
the books are definitely worth a read

I've met the authors and read all the texts.

FF is a useful way in for a barefoot newbie, but it is limited. The authors originally did their training in the US. I don't agree with everything FF posits, but the diet section is good.

Jamie Jackson's Founder and Paddock Paradise books are very good for anyone who wants to learn more about 'why barefoot' and how to do it. They are limited in other areas. But none of these texts including FF are purporting to be encyclopedic.

Re environment. I've worked with horses in the US and have had dealings with a range of horse owners. Some parts of the US are very dry and some are literally a swamp. So we can't outdo the US for either dry spots or mud.

I did find I had a lot to learn from my US horse friends and I think they may have learnt something from me too.

I've replied on your other thread but will repeat my recommendation of Pete Ramey's expensive but worth every penny DVD Under the Horse. http://www.hoofrehab.com/underthehorse.htm

Also The natural Horse by Jaime is imo a better starting place than HOG which is pretty hard going.
