Hi all, Just wandering if anyone can suggest/recommend me a book on backing/breaking the young horse. From Lunging/long reining to the first steps on board, or if anyone know's any books specifically on long reining,

all suggestions welcomed, always like a book to fall back on and even though I've backed a hand full of horses I feel its wise to have a read up each time:o:)

I absolutely love the Jennie Loriston Clarke (Catherston) books; Young horse: breaking and training and the Lunging and Long reining one... Mine are very well used :)

I have found Richard Maxwells 'From Birth to Backing' quite useful. I might have a look on amazon for the above too, as I'm breaking in my boy in the spring. X

Richard Maxwell, he has brought out an updated version of 'birth to backing' called training your young horse'. Its fantastic. He has also written a couple of others and made a dvd. None of it is too expensive and I have found it really easy to follow and logical. There's a forum too :)

An oldie but goodie and written in language you can understand is From Paddock To Saddle by Elwyn Hartley Edwards. There are two others very good too by Reiner Klimke and Anthony Crossley, both well worth a look something like Basic Training and Training the young Horse I think.
