Went to Oxfam shop a few weeks ago and found two Horseman's Year books for 1964 and 1966. It really is like looking back into history. Without exception all horses even those doing cross country are in simple snaffles and the occasional martingale not many breastplates about either.

The show horses are quite an eye opener one of the hacks wouldn't get a look in nowadays more of a light hunter nothing seems to be carrying any extra weight. Of course the clothes are another matter entirely. :)

They sound fascinating Cindars. We are so used to seeing overweight horses that to see them at their correct weight takes some adjusting to sometimes. Good point regarding the tack being kept simple too.
