Looking for help to boost my horses confidence when jumping. My boy is a real star when it comes to riding and he always tries to please but he really lacks confidence in jumping, I've known him for the last 8 months and he was always slightly unsure of jumping, but would take you over it,all be it a bit messy, I think through lack of education. A girl who had him on trial before I took him jumped him for about half an hour every day for a week, and he was pretty much battered over them, only very little jumps, but still, and this was why I took him as I couldn't bear to see this happen to him any longer. Since having him, I've done a little jumping but every time we approach, he slows down and eventually stops, not a sudden halt, but he's is obviously seeing the jump and really not wanting to go over it, if I use too much leg on the approach, he panics and jumps it awkwardly which upsets the issue further. I have loose jumped him and he will jump them but very hesitantly. I'm not looking to turn him into the next Milton, but just for him to enjoy popping over a few little ones from time to time, any advice and tips much appreciated, thanks.

Take it back to the beginning, trotting poles, poles round the school, once he has the hang of that then raise them to small jumps. There's loads of tips online, there's also another thread running which gives lots of good tips.

If you've never taught a horse to jump, then you need an instructor who can teach you to teach the horse how to jump. Find a good showjumping or eventing instructor who has experience starting horses over jumps and take some lessons. This the real potential to turn out quite badly otherwise.
