Dear all

My horse is a nightmare in the field (Well a nightmare generally too lol) He is silly, prats around and throws himself around when he gets excited!
He is always coming in with little cuts/knocks etc particularly on his legs. 2 cuts in 2 days now!

I have tried turnout boots and ordinary boots taped up with masking tape but guaranteed when I go to catch him they are off and lying around the field in bits! It isn't that the boots are uncomfortable or too tight/too loose etc he is just naughty and will wreck anything! I was bought a Hay bar by my best friend for my birthday and it lasted one night!

Does anyone have experiences with a horse like this and have you any advice on boots that stand up to the test! or any ways of securing them?

I am in a bit of a dilemma as I really don't like using them for turnout particularly as it is so hot but I am worried he will do himself some real damage one day.

Thanks

Boots with buckles - might be harder to get them off?
Pull on over reach boots too if your going to go the whole hog!
Does he ruin his rugs? If so, i've seen a horse with a 'bib' thing on, so that might be worth a try too.
As for your hay bar, poor you and naugty horse, but if he is a law unto himself then I'd just feed off the floor - more mess yes, but it would limit damage! (one would assume!)

Good luck.

Yup boots with buckles :) Preferably leather even though theyre expensive to start with!

We had one like this and had to leave him to get on with it. We greased his legs before he went out so that any knocks he got slid off mostly and used a bib in the boxes if he had to have rugs/bandages on; couldn't leave him with anything, he was a right pain in the butt! Still going strong at 20 though so no lasting damage except to their wallet!

Thanks for your replies.

Mmmm, buckles may be the way to go. The funny thing is he hasn't once (Touch Wood!) wrecked any of his own rugs! Just everything else.

It is such hard work when you have a horse like that, I sympathise with anyone who owns a wrecker! lol

Bibs! Will have to remember that! Last year while "playing" he reared and came down on the fence post and ripped his chest open. Cue box rest. Well he had to be bandaged to stop swelling and most days the bandages were ripped to bits, gamgee everywhere. Gave up in the end and stopped bandaging him! Luckily no problems with swelling! lol

My horse will bite and chew boots and bandages so he just has to get on with it!! He's 5 now and slowly starting to settle down on the accident front (touches wood!!)

Might be a long shot but i got an ex racer and when i first started turning him out he came in every day without fail with new cuts, to the point i had shares in vetrap!!
I too tried turn out boots and various brushing boots etc with no luck- he just destroyed them.

This went on for a year and then i changed farrier who did something slightly different with his shoes (actually to support his heels more not to help with the self harming!)
From this day onwards he has been fine, he will of course get the odd nick and cut but every month as apposed to every day. I no longer boot him at all.

Maybe its worth a word with your farrier?

McNally! This really made me laugh! Self Harming! Never thought of it that way!

Perhaps he just needs a counsellor! lol

Hehe, no seriously my horse is a serial self harmer, I have had him 2.5 years but he's only been ridden for less than half of that due to various injuries (currently has a broken leg)

BTW, I meant my horse needs a counsellor not yours! :-)

Blimey! Poor you! How awful! Are our horses related?? Wally is forever doing something!

What sort of break is it? Feel for you!

Horseylad, I really hope my 5 yr old grows out of it too! The only time of the day I get stressed is driving to the yard, dreading what he has done next !

Lol- I had considered one of those "talk to the animal" people at one point to try and find out what his problem was but not being convinced they work (infact no-where near convinced!) it seemed a waste of money.

Its not a really bad break and we are 5 months in now, I think all is going well- vet is coming for more x rays on Tuesday which i am hoping will say its fixed and he can go out to prepare for his next disaster.

Oh I know that one! I've had him since a foal and we had this dread driving to the yard every evening too!! I then moved him about a year ago and he is turned out with only my other two older geldings and (touches wood (again!)) he has been fine with a smaller herd.

He did start losing shoes as when he trots or canters he is a big moving WB, so I put over reach boots on but within 10mins he'd pulled one off and the other one was in pieces and I only found half of it!! I think the other half got swallowed!! So not wanting expensive colic bills I gave up and got the farrier to re-think his shoes!!

Good luck.

Fingers crossed for the X rays! Hope you let us know how you get on.

I love my boy but it is so stressful going to the yard sometimes! Your heart is in your mouth until you see them intact and still in the field grazing!

As soon as I get to the field I automatically look for blood! It is terrible lol

Here is my very own self harmer! lol

I knew it!! lol I ahve a big moving warmblood too!! It's a warmblood thing! They are Divas!!
Exactly the same. I put over reach boots on my boy and a friend and I sat and watched him murder them! then drop one in his water trough! and the other one ended up over his neighbours field! lol
