Boots for dogs?

My collie cross has a sore foot. We're bathing it and treating with antiseptic cream and making him wear a sock in the house to stop him licking it, and this approach does seem to be making things better. But he's missing his walks and wondered if anyone had ever used those little doggy boots to protect paws on walks? If so, which ones would you recommend and do they stay on ok when actually in use? (He's a medium sized lad about the size of a springer spaniel, if that helps ...) Thanks all ....

Hope you don't mind if I chip in...
We have two collies (a Border and a Welsh), the latter of whom managed to rip his paw pad on a piece of buried glass.

We used a Mikki boot that the vet gave us, which was OK for a couple of walks:

However, this thing is best used over a proper dressing and while it did let him get out on his injured foot, he found it very hard to walk in. He kept lifting his leg as if stepping over something and it's essentially a flat disc with a sleeve, so not very sympathetic to how a paw works.

My lad is quick and the instant he got the chance, he dashed off out of sight to rip the elastic straps off.
In response, the vet then applied a different over-dressing, made from some kind of red gauze that was like self-amalgamating tape. It was chew-resistant and the bottom was curved, allowing for a better, more natural gait.
 
I made some for a friend's dog once, used a rubber foot mat you can get in car accessory shops which was £3.
Lined it with foam as padding and cotton, added velcro straps, it worked well, good grip with the rubber too but was a pain the stitch round on my machine!
They had been buying sets and sets of cheap ones which were useless, they were made of Cordura (outdoor rug material) which just isn't tough enough so avoid those, they only last a few walks if that and it's false economy to use them. Get a good quality set if you can, avoid the Cordura ones.
 
Stick with the sock & buy a roll of duct tape for walks. Should only be needed for days rather than weeks.
 
We use pro-active paws dog boots (http://www.dogbootsactive.com/) for our lab when we do long walks in the Lake District as he can get sore pads. They're not perfect, but they do seem to help, stay on relatively well and don't cause him any discomfort.
 
We have ruff wear grip tex they cost about 60 quid tho so not what you want be spending for few days, we mountain bike with our lab about once to twice a month and he rubbed a paw on his first time out so bought the boots I protect him- he loves his time out with the bikes- the boots are fantastic tho they stay on when he goes paddling in streams running full speed for about 6mile rides and don't rub him at all and he is sensitive!!
 
If the skin is broken, cover it with gauze swabs (e.g. those skintact dressing pads), held in place with micropore, then one or more of your old socks depending on how much padding is needed and then wrap with vetwrap.
