Hi everyone,

Just musing really. I've mainly been a happy hacker with my girl for the past 8 years or so. I am now looking at improving the pair of us, plan to do more schooling and have some lessons (with the view to doing a bit of dressage eventually). My question is, should I be looking at getting some kind of boots for my mare's legs. She doesn't have any conformation faults which would cause her to brush etc. (as far as I can tell, though she's not done it yet). However is it common practice to boot for schooling? I don't want to stick extra tack on her unnecessarily but I am intrigued. We will also be doing more hacking as well (including hopefully some long distance pleasure rides) so anything which does both jobs would help.

Thanks in advance :)

Personally, if she doesn't need them then why put them on! Is she brushing? Then there would be a case for them, or if she is jumping/very hard flatwork.

There is a counter argument with booting that you can heat up tendons by booting horses, and this can make them more suceptible to damage.

If you want to boot there are a few good boots that allow airflow to keep the leg cool. (Tri-zone or cladene).

Hope this helps a little,

I always put boots on my horses!! He gets tendon and fetlock for jumping and hacking, bandages on all 4's for schooling, occasionally will put tendon on if im feeling to lazy for bandages and he gets brushing boots on all 4's for turnout! He also wears over reachboots on all 4's for near enough everything
