What do you use yours for and do I need to get some, if so which ones would I need, and what is the purpose? Sorry for acting a little dumb, I really cant remember
My horse doesn't wear boots generally, he doesn't brush or over reach so no need for them, he doesn't have shoes anyway so less chance of injury. Less is more IMHO and I don't like tendons getting too hot
When he starts jumping he may wear tendon boots but we'll see how he gets on over the smaller fences first
Over reach boots in the field (buying special field boots too)
Over reach boots on front and back with brushing boots on front and fetlock boots on back for hacking
Ditto the above except tendon boots instead on the front for schooling and jumping.
It just depends on the horse really. my horse is awful for over reaching etc and needs boots for when he has his 'moments' have saved his legs so many times! But my old horse didnt have one pair! If your horse can manage without them then id stay that way except for things like show jumping for added protection. Boots are such a nightmare!
I was lunging her and someone made a comment that she uses tendon boots, just made me think. My mare is unshod, I remember years ago with my other mare she needed knee boots for some reason?
unless you do eventing often or your horse is prone to over reaching or knocking feet together, you are unlikely to need boots and its best to not wear them if neither you nor your horse are used to them
If they don't need them I don't use any, wearing boots can do more harm than good, heating up tendons or rubbing, when lunging I often find they need hind boots as they can knock themselves more behind than in front.
Tendon boots protect against strike injuries usually required for jumping not flatwork, so the person was really making a pointless comment while you were lunging.
I think people wear boots way to often these days.
My horses never wear boots except for going cross country and thats only to protect bumps or bruising off the solid fences
But they never wear boots at home or showjumping!
