I heard the other day someone had been told that riding in front boots all the time means the tendon never gets stronger when you ride, is this true?

I didnt think it was and always ride mine in prolite boots for protection, just curious to hear what other people think

That sounds like utter rubbish to me, but ask Gamebird, our resident expert veterinarian.

Very few boots actually support the tendon, but they do stop it from getting accidently knocked or kicked.

I think there was something a while back about prolonged use of the medicine style boots being not terribly good, but don't take that as gospel.

Isn't it if the boot heats the leg up that this can weaken tendons etc? So a non booted leg is better off in this respect, as it can breathe? But boots/bandages do offer protection from knocks etc.

I always think its a bit of a catch 22 - if my mare had been wearing boots in the field the day she came in lame, she probably wouldn't have been lame and off for 9+ months with an impact injury to her tendon.........but wearing boots all the time has downsides too!

Something I am still pondering about for the future, as not sure which way to swing! Certainly my vet has just told me not to bother bandaging or booting her for turnout any more as it won't help "support" the injury now, but have to say it does make me a little nervous!

And that's just for turnout, haven't a clue what I will do when I eventually get back on her!

I think it depends on the boots. As CotswoldSJ said most don't support tendons. Wearing brushing boots etc to prevent knocks shouldn't affect the tendons uless they over heat. Supportive boots should not be over used though. Imagine if you wore an ankle brace every time you did anything and then tried without
