Boots - what does your horse wear them for and why?

brushing boots for schooling, in front always, behind if they move close. over-reach boots for any jumping at all.
open-fronted tendon boots for sj and schooling over jumps at home, if they're a bit casual. if it's a baby horse learning to jump, xc boots, all round, so s/he doesn't frighten himself hitting a fence.
for xc, good boots (style or NEW) all round, with tendon guards and rear cannon bone guards, and over-reach boots, always.
on the run up to a 3 day, hacking out in xc boots.
never turn out with boots on though, i don't like cooking the tendons all day.

Only used to use tendon boots infront and overreach boots for hackling/schooling/jumping, unless doing fast work then XC boots or Brushing boots behind, just to protect from overreaching (G also pulls shoes off like nobodies business!) and to stop potential tendon damage!! However, he now always has back boots/bandages on after throwing a massive splint due to wacking himself behind when jumping

Mine wears brushing boots when schooling/jumping, or exercise bandages if I can be bothered or am doing anything more strenuous. I'm saving up for some really good xc boots for xc (obviously) but in the meantime I'll bandage and sew them on.

I don't like riding without boots as it is easy for them to injure themselves (IME!) and prevention is better than cure! I once had a mare paw at a small gate I was trying to open from onboard and get her leg stuck in it - she lifted the gate off it's hinges with her foreleg and hopped back down the school backwards, dragging it along! She shook it off halfway down the school and due to her bandages didn't have a scratch on her

If she hadn't had them on it would have been a different story...

Baron wears over reach boots for turn out as he has a habbit of ripping his shoes off.

He wears boots (either his normal brushing boots or clarendon hunter boots depending on what we are doing) when jumping and hacking just to add a little padding incase of knocks, especially when hacking as he can nap and have little paddys.

Schooling on the flat he doesnt usually wear anything.

I think I mainly just use them for my peace of mind.

solo (TB, sensitive skin, moves close behind)
hacking- brushing boots all round, hes very close behind and brushes badly. and kneeboots.
jumping- tendon boots and brushing boots, and overreach boots.
xc- only do piddly ones as we have control issues- so brushing boots and overreach boots.
lungeing/schooling- fleece bandages and overreach boots.
sadly dont hunt sol cos of the control issue!

red (hackney x, built like a mini-TB with hairy legs)
hacking- tendon boots in front as dont have any brushing boots that are short enough! and his knee boots
xc/jumping- tendon boots and fetlock boots.
dont lunge red as he is terrified of the lunge line!
hoping to hunt him this season, he prob just wear tendon and fetlock boots.

i dont like jumping unless they are booted up, seen too many cuts, scrapes and accidents that could have been avoided.

Ginga wears over reach boot all the time ridden or driven, as he does over reach. At shows he wears them to warm up, the off at the last min for dressage. Pip wears them at indoor driving dressage to hightlight his action only! They all wear over reach and brushing boots as a precaution for marathons or obstacles, but only Ginga has them in cones. Jumping I tend toput front brushing boots on, just incase they crash because they are not very experienced.

mine came with a set of brushing boots which she has on for schooling, hacking and turn out. I would be so annoyed if she did knocked herself and the boots were in the stable. she also has overreach boots for schooling, hacking and turnout for the same reason and she has overeached in the field.

Mine are still young and thus clumsy..

Darcy wears boots, usually Westropp brushing boots, all round for everything - he had a bad leg injury last year and has done a suspensory and had a fractured cannon before I got him so I am rather protective of his legs. When we start doing xc we will use proper event boots. I do sometimes bandage when schooling.

Pinky is very very clumsy. she also brushes behind, so gets boots on. She usually just has a set of everyday tendon and fetlock boots on, however for jumping and fast hacks she gets a set of Clarendons on. again she sometimes gets bandaged when schooling.

I have had horses in the past who havnt been booted as they havnt needed it - but i do feel trhe two i have now are better booted than not...

Bloss wears equlibrium training boots for schooling and lunging as she can brush behind. She dosent wear any out hacking as we generally just amble along

Archie wears SMB Elite boots all round for everything, and over reach boots aswell - he can be a total arse and really throws himself around and is constantly knocking himself, hence the boots! He also wears splint boots and over reach boots in the field - for the same reason in that hes a prat in the field aswell!!

Never use boots for hunting - was always taught not to.

Don't use boots for flatwork or hacking, but I do have tendon boots for SJ and boots all round for xc - these came with my horse (who is on loan) so I put them on him for that as I reason he isn't mine so I should respect the owners wishes.

Flash wears those equine chaps in the field as he's so accident prone and was coming in with new injuries every day. He wears bandages all round and overreach boots for any ridden work.

I was thinking about getting the SMB elite boots, would you recomment them PG?

All wear tendon & fetlock boots for SJ. For XC, they wear a full set of decent boots with over-reach boots as well. One of mine is chunky too but he's also clumsy with it...! I also boot them up for lungeing and schooling (although sometimes for schooling, I'll just put on front brushing boots). And of course, they are all well booted for travelling :P

Can never be too careful!
