my horse hates travelling boots on his back legs - so i either have to bandage them or not put any protection on them. he wears boots for schooling depending on whether or not i am jumping! also not allowed boots for working hunter/show hunter/dressage! but i do wear them for jumping - although this is habit as i dont think he really needs them!
The only time I'd put Pepper in boots is when he's competing, travelling or hacking (in which case he only wears brushing boots because they have reflectives on).
Personally I don't understand why some horses always have boots on.
(Fair enough if they overreach in out in the field)
For XC she has fetlock boots in front and brushing boots behind.
For travelling she has XC kit as above (to save time at events) plus traveling boots on the back and over reach boots in front. She gets excited about events and I@m not a huge fan of dancing around a madly spinning horse trying to velcro items to its legs.
As a freelance groom, I was recently offered irregular weekend work at a large equestrian centre.........my God!!!! I haven't put stable bandages on so many horses since the sixties....and I'm not joking!!!! Neither have I groomed so many clean horses!!!! So many young horses wearing stable bandages ... I enquired why and was told that they suffered from filled legs.....well, all I can say is TURN THEM OUT!!!!
I never bandage in the stable unless they're competing at novice BE or above and have had a hard enough run that I feel ice tight is necessary, in which case I leave the bandages on overnight. Nor do I ever put boots on in the field, I don't think it's necessary and I worry about chafing in wet and muddy conditions. I do always boot up all round for schooling and hacking though, mainly because Missie is a young excitable TB and I would rather take a few seconds to stick some boots on that have her injure herself in a way that could be easily prevented.
