Boots...?...

I bandage.
1) Because I am good at bandaging.
2) They look pretty :D
3) For lateral work when schooling (My arena is VERY deep, I don't bother if its just a little walk and trot)
4) For lessons because they look smart, especially if its matchy matchy :D
I don't bother for roadwork, I only walk or slow trot on the roads really
 
just plain brushing boots on the front for my ex racehorse for everything (hacking and schooling on the flat at the moment, starting jumping soon and he will wear the same.) he isn't in desperate need of them now but was quite clumsy when he first came into work.
 
i bandage for flatwork, use tendon/fetlock boots for jumping and use carbon fibre xc boots for turnout because he's clumsy and managed to slice right through his neoprene brushing boots in the field
 
Turnout - SMBII all round with OR boots in front (mainly to reduce injuries and offer support for any hooly moments)
Flat - Bandaged all round with OR boots in front (for show more than protection if Im honest ;) but necessary for teaching lateral work where he has a tendency to stand on himself or catch the other leg)
Jumping/Hacking - SMB or woof double locks with Non Turn OR boots in front (Protection)
 
OR for flatwork
Tendon or just OR for SJing
Brushing boots all round for XC and OR (his owner doesn't boot him at all for XC so it's an upgrade on that!)
Naked in the field
 
No boots, aha. Would probably boot up if doing something like cross country, but he's a Welsh and tough as they come hah. But my TB mare used to ave tendon boots for jumping, brushing boots for flat,and overreach for anywhere she went, ever. Hah.

For flatwork: flatwork boots as he's a bit clumsy and the arena is a bit deep in parts so like to think/hope that he has a bit more support.

For hacking just brushing boots behind as when I got him he got very close. He's much better now he's muscled up a bit, but he did nick the inside of his leg without them once so he still wears them just in case.

Nothing for turnout because he's too concerned that he might never see a blade of grass ever again to bother much about running around :rolleyes:

Its personal preference. I don't actually own any boots :o
I bandage because its deep. Mainly because in my arena its really deep in places and rock solid in the other, and my mare has slipped in places a few times, and you have a tendancy to fall down holes if you don't know where they are so I use bandages for support.
I am sure if I had brusing boots I would wack them on instead of the bandages, but I like my bandages too much :D
 
Westropp Knee Brushing Boots and overreach boots in front nothing behind. She needs the overreach boots as she can be a clumsy baby at times, she has taken a chunk out of one on a couple of occasions so they are doing their job. The knee brushing boots because our hacking is roads with some steep hills and some slippy bits, someone on the yard warned us about the condition of the roads when we first arrived and recommended these boots. I'd seen them before and had planned to get some anyway as I know normal knee boots can be terrible for slipping down. These are also better as they protect the whole of the leg not just the knee.

I have been so glad of having them as she has gone right down on her knees. I dread to think how much of a mess her legs would have been had she not had these on, she scuffed the strike pads of both right up the front and tore the neoprene on one, but one leg was completely unmarked and the other had a patch the size of a 20p missing some hair that has now completely healed and the hair has grown back. They were worth every penny just for that day and she will not go on the roads without them.

Can't understand why so many don't boot their horses, especially when they ride on the roads, it takes seconds to put them on and they could save you so much heartache and distress (not to mention some huge vets bills). No matter what the breeding/age/use of the horse if it goes down on tarmac it will damage itself. I know of three horses on our yard that have gone down on tarmac/concrete now but only five wear knee boots regularly, many others hack on the roads daily with no protection.

Monty:-Bandage for all flatwork unless at a dressage show them spangly white fluffy dressage boots. :-)
Tendon and fetlock for sj and Prolites allround for xc.
Always use over reach but not the rubber ones as they irritate his sensitive skin, so neoprene or soft ones generally with sheepskim round the cuff. Also always turned out in over reach all round as incredibly clumsy in the field.

Tiger (old retired fart):- never wore boots, except for xc then just front brushing boots.
Pepsi :- woof wear brushing boots allround except for jumping then she has set of prolites all round, and when she was shod she wore over reach but not now shes barefoot.

Think im gonna get knee boots for hacking, i was planning on getting them for travelling aswell as hock boots as i use bandages not travel boots, but defo considering getting them for hacking now too
