Hi, I have a new puppy who has had his first vaccination. I know he can't go in areas that other dogs have visited until his second vaccination + 10 days.

My question is... can I take him to the water's edge on the beach so he can have a walk and get acclimatised to the experience of going down to the sea? Obviously I'd avoid other dogs and only go where the sea has just receded and in the rock pools.

I read that puppies need to experience a lot of things before they're 14 weeks old so they don't become fearful. He's a Border Collie so is just full of energy! :)

Any ideas would be appreciated

Its all about risk really. I asked my vet this question recently and she said it was probably one of the better places to take a not completely vaccinated dog but not without risk.

I decided the risk was minimised by going as tide was going out and we took our pup. he is six months now and fine.

We also bought cheap dog carrier and took him out in that too. Remember is not just places frequented by dogs but rats can also carry one of diseases vaccinated for - forget which, begins with L? That and parvovirus can live long time in soil I was told when investigating the risks last year.

Honestly, I would be patient and not risk it . . . a few more weeks is nothing . . . much better to be cautious than risk your not quite immunized pup picking up some nasty bug.

leptospirosis, I imagine you're thinking of, EL.

I personally would just wait - I'm not convinced the tide is sufficient to negate the risk.

I didn't get my current collie till he was 3 months and he'd never left the breeder's home. My previous collie didn't go out before vaccs were fully kicked in and both of them are fine and happy out in different situations :) Imo, dogs can be too confident and become too independent making them more difficult to train.

You can't talk about your new pup without photos though

It's up to you whether you want to risk it, I can't give advice as she could either become ill or she could be fine - who knows. You could possibly take your puppy out and about in your arms, so that it can see the world, observe the environment and stay safe.

There is still enough time after your pups last vaccinations to get him out and about socialising, and don't just assume that at 14 weeks it's all over - socialisation is an ongoing thing and I'd keep it well topped up through his adolescence!

I would carry a pup and not put it down (preferably quite busy places with lots of people, but not many other dogs), keep it away from places that lots of dogs that you don't know what their vaccination status is visit. I'd take the pup to friends that have nice friendly vaccinated dogs to socialise or invite them to mine.

Thank you all very much for your advice. I'm going to look into getting a dog carrier and take him out in that until his vaccinations are complete.

I'm trying to post a photo of him but can't seem to do it. Can anyone help please?

i take all mine out every day with me and carry them - we do the station, high street, beach, funfair, supermarket carparks, you name it.:)

Agree with carrying dog and experiencing things that way. Also recruit any nice friendly vaccinated dogs to start doggy socialisation. And agree PHOTOS are missing!!!!
