If you all recall, I was hauled over the coals last month re a puppy my neighbours got, it was sent off to a rescue centre in the end.
Looking on G~~~~tree I see lovely woofer for sale locally £150.00, I am tempted myself, is it possible to share a dog, he could stay with them during the day, and I could have him at night, or when it suited, I have two cats who would not be best pleased, but as long as he did not chase them it might work out.

Border collies need a lot of exercise and mental stimulation, as I recall your neighbours are pensioners so a young collie would not be the best choice imo. Can you not persuade them to take on an oldie which would be content to just potter around?

Its not the best idea in the world, if you do it you have to consider things like who actually has ownership of the dog, what happens if one or the other of your circumstances change, someone moves house etc. I wouldnt suggest a 2yr old border collie is the best dog for an older couple either, can they walk miles a day with it?

Yes, they want a dog to take for walks, the last one was out from morning to night, and otherwise spent all summer snoozing in the back yard.
I could take it down to the beach or on to the moors once it was OK to let off the lead. To be honest it looks lovely, I am a bit besotted my self, but don't really like walking as much as they do, actually I hate the thought of poo picking dog faeces!
Trouble with an older dog is health risks, to me Border collies tend to be agile, intelligent and so on, I could train it for competition!
Neighbours won't move, and I probably won't either.
I am getting a bit over-excited! Maybe I'll get the dog and let them take it for walks for me!

Buying a young border collie off Gumtree and sharing it between yourself, who has an aversion to dog poo (if you are capable of putting it in one end, you should be capable of picking it up from the other) and not really liking walking much, and your elderly neighbours would work out about as well as expecting a very young Bedlington Terrier to be perfectly house trained and sleeping through the night after a couple of days and then shunting it off to a rescue centre....

Suggest neighbours volunteer for the rescue centre they sent the pup to and walk the dogs there instead, would be doing a good deed with less personal commitment.

I get the feeling you arent really thinking this through Miss L toe......

What about when the neighbours can no longer take it for long walks because they are too old and infirm, who is going to take it then? Border collies need a lot of exercise and will not be content to snooze in the backyard all summer. Saying you 'probably' wont move isnt enough, what happens if you do? What happens if neighbours have to go into a care home or move in with relatives?!

You are besotted with the "idea of a collie". They are not easy dogs, they need a LOT of mental stimulation and they need a LOT of exercise.

And sadly, dogs poo - and it needs to be picked up. Let this dog go to someone who will give it one, home where it knows where it lives, and who owns it. It is not right for an elderly couple, or a part time dog owner.

What will you do if he chases your cats? what if they up sticks and move home. What if when the neighbours walk the dog he runs off and chases livestock? all very likely when you consider a dog like a Border Collie.

In my opinion too many things to go wrong, best advice I can give you dont do it.

Ditto everyone else really....

I have a springer x and have had collies in the past - im desparate for another collie but they need SO much exercise its just cruel (even though im around most of the day ) i havent got the energy nor time for massivly long walks.... springers happy to just potter.

Well my border collie gets walked in the mornings, walked by mum in the day and out with the horses for a few hours in the evening out riding etc. She's still bouncing off the Walls. Border collies are for active people who can walk them for hours each day and deal with their tireless addictions!

I really don't think a 2 year old Border Collie is the right dog, they need mental stimulation as well as physical exercise. I have a nearly 2 year old (next week) and she is nuts!!! She goes to agility training once a week, flyball training once a week as well as learning a few tricks, we have 6 acres here for the dogs to run in and she gets an hour walk a day and she still litterally bounces off walls.

Where to start? Between you and your neighbours the dog will be doomed. You haven't the conviction needed to make it work and from your previous post, your neighbours haven't the brains.

I don't think it is a good idea, for you, your neighbours, or the dog.

but in defence of borders, I know three (age 3, owned by a retired couple, 6 and 11 (owned by friends of mine) that go for two half hour walks a day (max), in fact due the older one of them the younger of that pair is only getting half that often and they are not bouncing off the walls/desperate to play etc when at home at all. They surprised me when I met them tbh ;) :D

Herding breeds of any kind are not for the feint hearted or the couch potato, especially if they are from working lines. Trust me I have had to deal with the aftermath of unsuitable homes for several herders and it's not been pretty!!!
Do this dog a real favour and give it a miss, don't add to it's problems. It is up for "sale" for a reason and at 2 I bet that reason is it is underworked and therefore destructive and unrully or it is in a working home but not good enough or too agressive with animals.
If you are really intent on a dog then look to an older rescue and a much more suitable breed that is crying out for a good home but if caring for the dog including clearing up after it is not for you stick with your cats, any older dog with a cat is a risk and you could find your cats injured or the dog comes of worst and you get a huge vet bill. Please think carefully and don't rush into this.

I don't think this is a great idea for the dog, your neighbours or for yourself really. Border Collies are not that easy to live with although I love the breed and I have one myself. But I have time to put a lot of work and walking in. They must use their brains as well as go for walks. Plus no matter what dog you get you will have to get over the poo thing.

No need to worry, they will insist on a Bedlington,
I will hold my self back from getting the Border Collie dog, though I was going to take it on to the moors where poo picking is not essential. I already have cats, and a horse, so really no need for another, weep.
The dog is only for re-homing due to personal circumstances, it is very friendly, cat friendly, and looks in super health.
Once I sell the horse I will have plenty of time on my hands.

omg what is the matter with Miss L Toe what is the matter with picking up dog poo that has came out of your own dog. All animals poo what goes in one end comes out the other. What is she going to do if the dog gets caught short. Just walking it on the moors isnt enough. I live in the country and it annoys me that people dont think they have to pick it up. I have a nature reserve to the front of my house and miles of walks to the side even then the dogs go to obedience and agility classes, It doesnt matter what dog you get they all need work weather it is a terrier or a collie, are you miss L Toe prepared for the work and the long walks and the time it takes to look after a dog. I think not. Please dont get a dog untill you can pick up poo and clean the dog if it has a bad tummy, be prepared to look after, walk and train it. Let it only have one home and know who its master is other wise you will end up with one unhappy dog and it will be another dog put into an animal shelter because you will get sick of it or even worse it will be one mixed up dog that could be a real big problem.

Do not believe all your read in FREE ad's either, for them to say it's abeing sold due to personal circumstance and is good with dogs and cats could actually equal= he has never lived with a cat but seen a few through the window, is destructive, has agressive tendancy etc;) people will say anything but their prayers to rid of a dog they deem a problem. If I had a £1 for every dog we got handed in with a glowing report of it's outstanding behaviour, only to find it has some really bad issues, I will be a millionaire:rolleyes:

*bangs head on table*

SO your telling me that even though you won't pick up dog poo, you'll be happy sidestepping dog poo on the moors?

Please don't get a dog.

Personally, I would be ashamed NOT to clear up after my dog, whether she poos on the road, moors, beach or wherever!

Collies really are not ideal pets. They are bred and designed to be working dogs and without the mental stimulation herding sheep gives they can very quickly deteriorate into mildly aggressive dogs. I hate tarring breeds with the same brush but they just aren't great pets unless they have a job. There are so many dogs more suited to your neighbour's needs. Surely a smaller dog would be a much better idea? It would be easier for them to walk, train and look after. Please please please think this through more carefully as I have seen so many people rescue collies that have turned aggressive. These were experienced dog handlers too, not complete novices.

any dog off gumtree - no

a 2 year old BC who has probably already been failed by humans, for you and your neighbours? Double no.

sorry but are you actually serious or on the wind up?:o I cant decide if this a joke tbh
