Help! I've got a 20 month old border collie coming to stay in a week or so and I don't know what to feed it! I can't feed RAW just yet and all I know is that it's been on a bog standard dry mix (perhaps the dreaded bakers)

Any ideas greatly appreciated

all our collies go on beta light or beta active (depending on activity levels/weight)

is this a permenent arrangement? whats the dog on now?

Dont change its diet immediately. Let it settle in and then change gradually. Remember its easy to send Border Collies loopy with feed ;)

Yes, im asking on behalf of my parents. My mum was very excited on the phone so I didn't get what he was on now, she just knows that a lot of advertised dog food isn't the best, so asked me to ask you knowledgeable people what will be best for him!

stick with whatever hes on and choose your next food carefully and slowly change him over :)

even if hes on crappy bakers - stick with it until hes settled and you decide which food next :)

Sorry Noodle I would disagree (don't take it personal, I seem to be making a habit of it :o) if it is Bakers I would get him off it ASAP.

Try Arden Grange, Fish4Dogs, a lot of collie people seem to swear by CSJ and I am starting my older dog on Autarky next week. Wainwrights by Pets at Home is not the worst in the world.
I had mine on Beta in an emergency and the salmon and potato one produced very huge orange runny pooes, but appreciate it might work better for collies :)

CC i may start to take this personally :(;););)

i meant a week on bakers and start the switch - just give him some time to settle in - a week on bakers wont kill him imo

:)

My collie is a very picky eater, she is not in the least bit food orientated. When I put her bowl down, she nibbles at it, leaves it, goes back to it, nibbles a bit more and very rarely clears her bowl.

The only food she will happily eat is Skinners Museli (VAT free :)). She has a small bowl in the morning dry and another in the evening with warm water which stirs up to make a light gravy.

I have no idea if this is common to collies as such or just particular to mine.

I'm not too sure to be honest, I last had a collie about 10 years ago and she ate anything, and everything in abundance! Never had a sick day in her life!

My last one had a very dicky tummy and eventually I settled on James Wellbeloved lamb and rice kibble (they use barley and not oats in this one). New girl came from a rescue and this is also what they were feeding (coincidence) however I feel that her tummy is still not settled enough to proclaim it her food forever. She's only been here a week and will still be shedding after her vacs so wondering if that's also causing a bit of upset. Am giving it three weeks before thinking about a change. Watching with interest what everyone else on here is feeding in the meantime.

My Collie eats Skinner field and trial crunchy (also VAT free). Keeps him at a fairly level weight - even tho I have to feed him twice his recommended body weight. All others foods I had to feed 3x his weight to keep him where he is.

"coming to stay" as in for a couple of weeks..? or what:confused: sorry im confused.

If its a dog you are having to stay for a few weeks then dont change its current routine or feed.

If its going to be yours, i recommend Arden Grange, all 6 of mine do well on either the performance or light. CSJ is 'ok'.

Working sheepdog is on Burns Chicken and Rice....FAB U LUS....keeps his condition, weight and fitness....also it is made by vets.
Echo changes gradually.
Good luck with your dog.
Bryndu :)

My BC is on Arden Grange Light and has half a pouch of James Wellbeloved mixed into his evening feed. He does eat it try but the wet just seems to make it more appetising.

Suits him well.
