Border Terrier advice please

We are thinking of getting one of these pups but not sure if it's the right thing to do , the ones we saw at Badminton seemed well behaved and friendly , we already have a cat , would it be unfair to get a puppy or would the cat be ok with it ? ,also do the males or females make better pets temprement(sp) wise? sorry for so many questions !
 
I'm sure your cat will be fine if you get a BT from a puppy.

I've got a BT dog and my mum has a bitch so I know them quite well. I'm not going to lie to you, they can be little buggers, but only in a terrier type way!

They are great little dogs and totally adore people, so they make great pets.

Both ours are quite keen on killing small fluffy animals, and my mums bitch can be a bit aggressive on occasions, but it's more for show than anything else.

I very much doubt many puppies would take on a cat. Make sure the first intoduction is done with an escape route for the cat and teach the pup never to chase the cat, distract its attention with tasty treats and just basically act like there's very little interesting about the cat being there.
My two terriers were introduced to rabbits and hamsters by the time they were 3 months old!
Chances are your cat will kick your pups ass! lol
 
No I don't. I understand your worries, I got my border when he was a year old and if I had I cat I'm sure he would have tried to kill it!

But you have to remember it is going to be a tiny little puppy when you get it, and your cat will be able to assert their authority at an early age!

I got my Jack Russell after i had the cat (she was 12 when Boris entered in her life) Misty the cat Loathes dogs (she hated our old bassets) she would run off and disappear for while, She can be bit of drama queen. Enters Boris..... she was absloute livid with having a dog permantely living in the same house as her! I made sure she has her own space upstairs and a escape route so Baby gate at the bottom of stairs. Boris was taught not to chase her. 16 months later they are ambiencable! Not quite lovey love, she will NOT curl up and sleep with him. She's now happy to have him around (better than with Bassets) but would be livid if he goes near her sleeping spots! The cat is still bigger than Boris still!!

So it is best to get a puppy and intro to your cat.... it will be ok...
 
i have a border terrior and i absolutely love him to bits!
such a lovely temperment and very loyal!
he is fond of asassinating small creatures.... but im sure if they are introduced whilst the puppy is young he will learn the cat isnt food!
 
My OH has a Border and I'm seriously hoping he wont get another one afterwards....

Morse has to be the most ignorant, arrogant, pig headed dog I've ever met. He's known as the SBD (sh1t bag dog); he's always being annoying even though he's 13 years old! He's a nice boy and all, but his ignorance would put me off ever getting another one. Norfolks are nicer, and Cairns too!

Whinges, scrounges, ignores you if what you're asking him to do doesnt suit him, runs away if you tell him off, barks loudly when you get up in the morning and wakes the whole house up, whines incessantly for more food even when he's just been fed, refuses to 'sit' or 'go down' even though he knows damn well what you mean, sometimes has 'accidents'......

Do you want me to go on? He just isnt my kind of dog!

lol, he does sound like a naughty boy!!! I don't think they are all like though... our 2 don't do any of the things you have mentioned.. in fact they are really good in the house.

Yet again, because he is allowed to, either that or there is a medical reason for his behaviour.

Refuses? You could try training him in a different manner, one where he will be willing to do things to please you.

Yes attention seeking dogs do this, its all down to the owners Im afraid.
