A good friend has recently moved into her first house alone and is finding it quite lonely and is missing the family dogs badly. She has always had Golden retreivers at home but her cottage is small and she would love a BT pup. She will take the dog to work with her and it will be at the yard mornings/evenings and weekends and will stay with me if she is away for any reason so it would be ideal if it came from a breeder who has cats as well! We have been looking on the web but it is so hard to tell the good breeders from the bad so would really appreciate it if someone could recommend one? She lives near J12 of the M1, so Beds/Bucks borders but will travel a reasonable distance to find the right pup. She would like the pup if possible early in the new year.

Many thanks for any recommendations.

Would she consider rescue? There is a dedicated breed rescue and they are most likely to have youngsters in after Christmas after the novelty has worn off :( and they will assess any dogs they get in for suitability with cats and other dogs.

Also it is a good idea to wait until after Christmas (IMO!) as you run the risk of fuelling the 'ready for Christmas' brigade.

I do really get what you are saying about websites - on another forum, I learned about dogs being seized from a breeder in the USA - the pics were horrific - but to look at their website, you'd think they were very responsible, importing good dogs from Europe, health testing, getting working qualifications, all sounded very impressive but it was bunkum, they were overwhelmed and their dogs were all starved :( I know some of us have bought unseen but nothing beats a visit to a good breeder.

This is one of the reasons she wants to wait until the new year as I would not consider any breeder that has puppies available for Xmas to be a responsible breeder, fortunatley she is with me on this one.

I have tried to talk her into a rescue as all my dogs and cats have been rescues, the problem is that her parents got a rescue when she was younger and they had a lot of problems with it so her only experience has been negative. I have suggested that she waits until after Xmas and tries for a rescue puppy as I am sure there will be some available then. Having trawelled many rescue websites and looked at the breed rescue they do not seem to be a common breed that comes up for rehoming as puppies.

Well to balance things up a bit I took on a rescue in Aug and she has been absolutely fantastic, no problems at all. Each dog will have individual needs and great care is taken to match a dog to the right owner so try and persuade her :D
