I have been tring my best to look for a bitch to breed with my Border Terrier. He is 2 years old and not yet proven. I have put some local adverts up and i wondered if anyone could tell me where i am going wrong- he is KC reg and got good bloodlines. I have said that for his first time it will be free and all i would want is one of the pups. i have a waiting list of people who would have his pups hence why i am desperate to breed him! can anyone give me any advice? thanks!
 
well, if you could cope with cross-breeding him the first time just so he gets some practice (!!!) i've got a gorgeous jrt who needs a boyfriend. she's small though (longish but short-legged) so i don't want a big border terrier on her, if that makes sense! mine is a right tart and also very sweet-natured so won't give him any grief or put him off the job!
obv as the pups would be cross-breds it would be up to you if you wanted one or not. I'd want to keep one, and my bitch has such a fab temperament that I have a few people who'd want one of her pups.

If you want a puppy, then you are not offering your stud dog for free. What does a KC reg puppy cost £200 ? that means your stud fee is £200 which is a lot of money. I think you are being rather cheeky.

Unless your dog is a show winner in his own right, why would anyone want to use him ? if I had a bitch, I would want to know that the owner of the dog knew how to handle him in the breeding situation - do you have this experience ?

If you are that desperate then buy a non related bitch and put them together.
 
Take him to some shows and when he starts winning some things then he has proven he is good enough to pass on his genes - having good bloodlines and potential homes is a poor reason to breed - the vast majority of pedigree dogs have good bloodlines. A male dog can sire 100's of puppies - so your dog needs to prove himself!
You also need to get all the health tests done on him that are standard for your breed. No-one is going to put a really good bitch to an unproven dog with nothing more going for it than it has nuts and you want a pup. The kind of people who would jump at a free covering should not be breeding puppies at all and will only be in it for the money. It costs a lot of money and time to breed a litter of pups so people want to be sure they can find good homes - only the best ones are going to sell in the current financial climate. If I were you I would get him neutered and buy a puppy.
 
tracey01 you are the exact reason why i get annoyed and am dubious about posting on these forums. I am not a cheeky person i am very honest and i thought maybe there was someone on here that wanted to breed their girl for pleasure and not just to show. what i ment by good homes is whoever had the pups wouldnt have a problem selling them and they would all go to members of my family and close friends if they wished and who would be willing to pay for the pups. they would have homes for life. i really dont see what the problem is with that! i wish i never asked.

You posted to ask why no-one was taking you up on your free offer of a stud dog. I gave you my opinion on why no-one is rushing to take you up on your offer.

The answer is, you are not offering a free stud dog, you want a puppy in return. You are also offering a stud dog who has done nothing except for being a pet and you have no breeding experience.

I don't think using the word "cheeky" is offensive/rude or aggressive. I think you are being over sensitive.
 
As others have said, you are actually asking for a lot even though you say the stud fee is waived in lieu of a pup. That means at today's prices you are charging £400 for the stud fee; even the champions don't charge that much! On top of that you have to consider how much it costs to get a puppy to selling age and that's providing everything goes well so yours is a very expensive offer to a bitch owner; they might as well go to a top class dog without the restrictions.
As others have said, if you take him showing and he does well, then you are more likely to have someone ask if they can use him. You can then ask if you could have one of the pups at a reduced rate in lieu of a stud fee but don't be surprised if they would prefer to pay a straight fee and for an unproven dog that should only be around £100 with a no pups, no fee promise at the very least. As he's unproven, you have no idea that he would mate a bitch or that he has in fact got lead in his pencil so it is as much a gamble for the bitch owner as yourself. You also have to check that the bitch is correct with a good temperament as you don't want your dog involved with anything less than a good specimen otherwise other people won't use him if he's thrown bad pups which might have not been his fault but the bitch's.
I'm struggling with as suggested, that you buy an outside bitch and breed your own, as, rightly or wrongly, I have visions of it being seen as a money making scheme which is not fair on the bitch or her future pups. Are you positive that you could perhaps keep the whole litter if homes can't be found for them as it's amazing how many promised homes disappear as soon as they are born, family or not?!
I'm not trying to be awkward, just perhaps pointing out things you haven't thought of yourself yet; as an ex-Border Terrier breeder for over 20 years, I feel I might have the experience to back it up.
 
Totally agree with MFH. A first time, proving stud is usually free anyhow, with no puppy offered back, or was when I was breeding/showing dogs. I attended a talk to vet students at Crufts this year (I'm not a student my daughter is). Both the head of the KC and the KC chief vet said would vets please stop recommending Border terriers as good pets as the breed was being ruined by over producing

Not suggesting your dog isn't good enough quality, although you won't know unless he is shown or assessed, but doubt anyone with a top quality bitch will use a dog without a successful show record. And in turn that will mean poorer quality pups will be produced.
If you really want to keep his lines why don't you contact his breeder, they are almost bound to have puppies with very similar lines.

I think the way to get advice on this is to contact a border terrier breeder for advice (perhaps through the breed club). They are the experts and if they think you dog is suitable they may even be able to suggest suitable border terrier bitches looking for stud dogs.

But I guess you should be prepared for them to potentially say he isn't good enough (Obviously i don't know if he is or isn't - but it would take an expert to judge).

In my opinion - this would be the responsible way to do it/ get info/ advice - but that's just my opinion.
 
QR I'd take the fact that no one has responded to your ad as a sign that no one locally wants their bitch bred to an unproven male, with no health tests carried out.

You don't HAVE to breed him, I have two KC reg dogs with good bloodlines and I am not breeding from them, there are enough dogs in the world already, which I why we bought them and didn't breed from our old bitch.

Scanning for a bitch to put your dog to over the internet or on a local ad is not what a lot of bitch owners would go for, sorry, I'd run a mile (different breed though).

Don't be put off coming on here - we are all passionate about dogs and we can have differing opinions without being argumentative - unlike other areas of the forum
